Windows folder on my T42
Dear all,
Could some of you guys post here the size of your WINDOWS folder?
I find mine to be too large. It has 3Gb. I thought that Windows HDD space requirements were aroung 1Gb.
thanks!

I wonder what's going on...
Anyways, I'll upgrade to 80Gb (Samsung silent) tomorrow and this won't be a problem anymore!
thanks folks!
thanks alot in advance.
IBM ThinkPad T43 2668-72u + RAM upgraded to 1GB = not just as best for business but also as best all-purpose professional portable computer ever!
I got the Samsung that appears in this review/comparison/benchmark:

I'll tell my impressions once I get it installed!

Just remember one thing. The Windows folder also is the location for all downloaded service packs, hotfixes, and update files. Depending on how your folder views are set, you may never see these "extra" files and folders. The replaced files are compressed and stored in case you need to roll back from some update. I have found these stored files can be as much as 1.75GB if you have all the service packs and such.
There are also numerous log files and temp files made in different folders under the Windows folder for applications, most notably MS Office. I have found cases of these logs and temp files to make up as much a 500MB.
So these two cases for some of my machines is over 2GB of stuff that, if proven to be okay to delete (meaning your hotfixes and service packs etc have not broken your system) will clear up quite a bit of space from a folder that sees a lot of activity.
A defrag after clearing some of this is quite necessary.
YMMV

I have installed the new Samsung 80Gb HDD. The original HDD was a Hitachi, 40Gb. Both HDDs are 5400RPM.
The new HDD seems very silent. Better than the original. I haven't heard any clicking noises either. In addition, this drive appears to generate less heat. I'm suprised about the reduced heat...
It's been only one day... but I thinl my evaluation will not change.
Dear Johan, this HDD seems more silent, but it's hard to say if it is completely silent. This is a very subjective matter. All I can say is that this is the best one I've ever seen, but I have not tried all HDDs on the market! Good luck!
