t20 Boot Question

Do I need to have the floppy drive to boot from scratch? I am buying a(an?) used model of this laptop and have a seperate hard drive for it that is new. Can I put everything together and boot from the old dvd drive with some sort of bootable install disc, or do I need to buy an internal/external floppy? I have this odd toshiba external floppy (for some reason) and it hooked up with the propriatary (sp?) port on my japanese friend's thinkpad 240, so I think this may work but I dunno. So what do you think about it? Thanks a lot.

With a Windows 2000 CD or a Windows XP CD you can boot from the CD directly and install. You may to go into the BIOS to set the boot seqence properly. ... JD Hurst

Don't forget to update the BIOS - I'm pretty sure that the T20 has some BIOS specific stuff for Windows XP.

I'll prolly run 2000 pro for a bit until I research using so sort of linux to make sure all my wireless and dvd stuff can be working on it.

The 240 external HDD requires a special socket that was used for external FDDs in older TPs and will not directly connect to later models. You can pick up internal FDDs for your T20 on eBay for a reasonable price. They are still invaluable for a lot of things.

BTW, the T20 wont boot from USB. It's not set up in the BIOS.

I imagined, but I always thought that the t20 and the later 240s were about the same age. I dunno.

The T20 came out in mid 2000. That was around the end of the line for the 240 series as it was replaced by the X20.

The 240 series seems like a [censored] child in the TP lineup. I have 2 and I love them.

I actually bought one cuz I loved my friend's so much. But then the screen was dead and UPS lost it when I sent it back. So three months later and never using UPS again I am ordering a t20.

Edit: I actually and just waiting to go to japan myself and pick up a 240z with the japanese keyboard and all that.
