Swapped T42p for T42 (order change)..question please!

#1 Post by STS06 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 2:40 pm

Hello all...well I made the move

I trashed my orginial order for a T42p for a T42

The new comp is a T42 2373N3U

1.8 Ghz
512 mb
15" SXGA
Radeon 9600
60 Gb 7200 rpm
Intel 11b/g
Fingerprint Reader
+1 gb extra of RAM

It replaces the 2.0 Ghz, 2 Gb, FireGL T2 (128mb), 60 gb computer. I realized that the 42p was just too much, especially since I already have a great desktop. The price difference between the 42p and 42 was a whopping $670 (both were under EPP).

I do have a question though. I wanted to change the Intel WLAN card to the IBM one but was told its not possible. So....I ask you, is it possible to swap the cards after I get the computer? The reason being is simply b/c I have read and heard (overwhelmingly) that the IBM WLAN card is much better.

Anyways, the "ordeal" is over so I thank everyone who took the time to answer my questions. Good day!

Same T42

I have the same T42, its working like a charm, but the wireless card suck. It keeps dropping, I have even updated the drivers. I would like to know how much it would cost to put the IBM card in.

Hi arun (you indian by the way?). Glad that everything besides the WLAN card works great~kinda cool that we have the same comps! But sadly, what you said about the WLAN is what I keep hearing all the time. I REALLY want to swap it for a the IBM one.

Yes.
Order the a/b/g card from the accessories pages on IBM/Lenovo's site. You will have to remove the keyboard and the palmrest to change the wireless card. Check #8 in the FAQ here:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689
for how to get it all apart and back together. There are even movies on how to do it.

Does replacing the WLAN card (which seems to require removing the keyboard and plamrest) void the warranty (I bought a 3 year)?

Is changing the WLAN card to the IBM one difficult, and lastly is it worth the effort? Thanks!

Is the IBM 11a/b/g card the same one mysbca listed (two or three posts above)?

Also funny thing is that the TP WLAN card is 50 cents more on the EPP than on the sale page that mysbca sent me..guess I won't use EPP for that!

I would try before you buy.

I have a T42 with the Intel 2200BG Wireless Adapter, and it works fine for me. When you get your laptop, update the Intel driver and Access Connections to the latest versions from Lenovo using the ThinkVantage Software Installer. See how it works for you. I think some people are having incompatibility problems with certain routers. Maybe you won't.

Thanks gom..thats good advice. I will do exactly that and wait and see if its worth buying the other card. I personally dont have wireless...I have a desktop at college so if I need the net on the laptop, it'll be thru a ethernet chord. But in the future, I may need/have wireless in which case I'd like a strong WLAN card.
