Which T series is it? And which key?

The mechanism varies, the fiddliest of which on my T23 was the cursor keys. Took them off once to clean underneath and wish I never did it as it took a good hour to get the fiddly mechanism back in and working.

And that is with my small hands.

Hmmm they are generally all different. The 560X for example has different mechanisms to a 560Z and again to a T23 (the ThinkPads I own)

Ok just took the cap off my Q key to remind me what it is like on a T23, it might be different for a T40p.

What I have is one white piece that is X shaped from the side and a black bit at the top which fits into this white piece with a hole in it, this is what the key snaps into. When the white folding piece has the black piece placed in, it looks like a picnic table from the side :)
_
X <--- bit like that where X is the white folding piece and the _ the black piece the key snaps on to.

First get the mechanism like this (if it is the same as the T2x series) and you will then find you have a piece that is like a square u. Get that piece aligned so that the bottom of the 'U' is facing down towards the palm rest, it fits in place with two minute clips of sorts.

Then get the 'pinic table mechanism, and gently push it in so the two notches that are at each end (prongs) snap into the black U shaped piece you it in place.

Then snap the key down on the top.

This is very hard to explain but the best I can do. It took me ages to figure this out on my T23, and equally as much time to find where the U shaped piece flew off to on my dark green carpet...

Hope this helps!

Yep gotcha.

Same as T23 by the looks of it.

On the bottom of that key is the black piece that fits into the white picnic table piece (you will be glad to hear this is good news, easy to fix when most of it is still in place).

Prise away that piece that is still on the key and gently place it onto the white picnic ;) table piece, so that the notches slide in on the black piece into the teeny holes on the white picnic table piece. Once that is secured, push the key cap back on firmly but not too hard.

Hope this makes sense.
