A few T-42 questions from Warranty to Accessories

#1 Post by STS06 » Thu Aug 11, 2005 5:10 pm

I called customer support today and asked if I could add the Thinkpad Protection for my newly ordered T42. Unfortunately, its not available in California due to some state laws (as i was told). Can anyone ellaborate on why I cannot get the protection- its now more for curiosity as to why I can't get it.

Also, if anyone was interested, I asked if replacing the WLAN card (I'm thinking about switching to the IBM one from the currently ordered Intel one) would void the warranty. I was told that it will NOT void the warranty. I didn't really get a straight answer from this board (Thats a first!-seriously!) but now we all know! So alls is good.

Also, do you encourage buying those covers for my thinkpad..the notebook sleeves?

It's a form of insurance, so you'll have to ask your state's insurance commission that question.

STS,

From what I understand, they cannot *sell* or *ship* to Califorina. If you can find someone out of state to order it for you (or you can order it and have the documentation shipped there -- it is just the terms and conditions of the TPP), they will honor it within the State of Califorina if something goes wrong.

That's what I did. A few months ago, they were unable to sell the TPP to New York, so I purchased it and had it shipped to New Jersey. However, I have been able to use my TPP in New York.

Thats smart thinking but I am slightly confused. When you mean order, you mean the computer itself correct? If that's the case, then no can do primarily because its already been ordered (but not shipped). Also, for me, it'll be a bit of trouble to have it shipped elsewhere. But a great idea. I guess I'll have to live without that protection.

You can order TPP within 30 days of invoice/ship (normally). You can place them in two different orders.

Still confused, sorry. Since I ordered my comp (billing and shipping address is in California) I can no longer get the TPP...thats what I was told. So to avoid the same problem, you ordered your comp (billing and shipping address) sent to New Jersey instead. Is this correct?

So since my order is sent (but not shipped), I can't get the TPP b/c my comp is sent to california. The only way around it is to cancel my order, place a new one for a different state (billing and/or shipping in a different state) and pick it up. This option causes too much trouble for me.

This is my understanding, please correct me if I am wrong. Nonetheless, thanks for the help!

Incorrect.

You can order the TPP within 30 days of invoice, even if it is not part of the original purchase.

It can be in two different orders. Call your rep (or any rep) and tell them you would like to purchase the TPP and give them the other order number. They will setup an entirely different order number, but will link it to your system.

They do not have to be ordered at the same time. You just have to order it within the 30 days "no questions asked" return period.

EDIT: See the post here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=14024, expecially the one written by "rockyp"
