T42 ultrabay harddrive?

#1 Post by RSharpe » Thu Aug 11, 2005 8:12 pm

I've heard it's possible to stick an extra hard drive with the help of a special hard drive bay in the Ultrabay slot for other models, but is it possible on the T42? It not, what else is the Ultrabay good for besides the optical drive?

I have the li-poly ultrabay battery for my T42, its real nice (although a bit expensive) and gives me about 50% more battery life, so real world I can go about 6 hours these days, but the batts are already starting to age :(.

T-series ultrabay harddrive

For the older T-series (T20, T21, T22, T23, T30), the Ultrabay 2000 Hard Disk Drive Adapter could be used to insert a second hard disk drive into the machine (in the slot that can also be occupied by an optical drive, the internal floppy disk drive or a second battery).

The new T-series (T40 onwards), had a smaller ultrabay (same width and depth as the older models, but not so high). If I remember correctly, IBM also manufactured a new Hard Disk Drive adapter that would fit the new size ultrabay (i.e. same dimensions as the optical drive for a new T-series laptop). We had at least two of these new slimeline Hard Disk Drive adapters for use with T40's and T41's at my old place of work, but over time they have been 'lost' (left in user's machines when we hand them back after fixing some problem, or sold on ebay!)

The IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T40/T40p, T41/T41p, T42/T42p series, lists the 62P4553 as an optional FRU - Ultrabay Slim hard disk drive adapter.

Thanks! So there is an adapter out there! The Leveno/IBM website has been terrible. It has redundant items and isn't generally very informative or clear as to what accessories are compatible with which products!

Worth repeating.
The key word is "SLIM".
The T42 (T40 onward really) is slimmer than their predecessors and anything that goes into the ultrabay will have the word SLIM attached to it. The extra battery is Slim, the DVD multiburner is Slim, and the hard disk adapter is also.

Thanks. I don't think the bay is available in Canada. I can't seem to find on the Canadian site. So the Ultrabay 2000 units are for pre-T40 Thinkpads I guyss.
