Thinkpad T42 Cloning

#1 Post by Champ » Fri Aug 12, 2005 6:34 pm

What kind of software would regularily clone my t42 easily to a USB Hardrive :)

I'd prefer incremental clones, i.e. the files that changed but if it's faster just recloning that'll do :p

the thing is all the backup software these days create an "image." I've tried Acronis, Paragon and ghost. They offer cloning for Upgrading the drive but not for regular backups.

I want a program that allows incremental backups without an image. So a program I can use like ghost, acronis etc. except instead of creating an image it just copies the fine onto my usb HD. The reason why I want a 1:1 copy instead of an image is that I can hook it up to a borrowed laptop and access my files, hopefully even book from it instead of waiting for my t42 to get back and reimage the drive

I know this is hard!! so thanks in advance

I use this in my work to do an incremental backup without doing the image of the disk, I hope works for you http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

I use Stomp Backup MyPC by Veritas (originally Seagate Backup Exec). It does full or incremental backups. You can choose to compress the data or not. You can use it to do a complete restore, or restore individual folders or files. You can also use it to backup and/or restore the System State (basically the registry).

The only thing, to restore to a hard drive that doesn't have Windows installed, you need to install Windows first, then any Service Packs, then install Backup MyPC, then you can restore your system to the original state.

Caveat: You might need the program on the borrowed laptop to read the files, but if you don't compress, maybe not. I haven't tried using the program with the compression off.
