3 Questions T43/42 14.1/15 and From where

#1 Post by rpaturi » Sat Aug 13, 2005 9:21 pm

My budget is below 2K and prefer to keep around 1.6K. I had T30 and using T40 from work. I stopped using T30 as it gets really hot, and I use it as a LAP top - literally, I work on my couch/bed a lot with the computer on my lap in. I use it for Database backend loaded on the system wiht lot of number curnching.

1: I prefer cooler machine like the T40, which one should I get 42 or 43 does the processor makes any difference, I am willing to go lower on the processor speed if it makes difference in the noice and heat.

2: I take my machine everywhere and am happy with 14.1" T40 screen, is 15" too bulky the way I work ?

3: The best pricing I can find any where are no less than IBM/Lenovo, but I see people quoting wonderful prices for 1.86G/512/60 machines where can I find these ?

Thanks for your help
= Ravi

1.) T42 is cooler. No big different of speed between t43 and t42. You can overclock plus underboltage the t42 if you need.
2.) 14" seens better. I think 15" is too big for travel
3.) Haven't experienced that. Can't help 8)

2. The 14" is better for carrying around.

3. For T43, take a look at the model 2686DGU. It seems to be very good value with a list price of $1779. It is 1.86GHz P-M with 512MB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1" SXGA+ and the DVD multi-burner. The credit card discounts used to be 10% off, don't know if it still available. Same with the student/alumni discounts. You should call a sales rep to see what discounts are available.

I'm very pleased with my T42 2373M3U. I bought it in Feb. 05 from IBM. I'm a college alumni. Just checked the education website http://www.ibm.com/education/us and the price for a M3U is now $1799.20, very close to what I paid.
IBM T42 2373M3U - that's broken and needs to be replaced

Looks like the best way is to be lurking at sites for couple of weeks to get best deal.

I found 1.86/768M/60G7200/DVDRW/T42/3Years for 1685 at ibm site. I found another deal (expired) the same config for 1399 at same ibm site just about 10 days ago

I will keep on lurking for next few weeks untill I NEED the machine.. not just WANT it.

For the best deals, try resellers like Euclid Computer (a reputable reseller) or of course the owner of this site, Bill Morrow.

Also check out the Visa/Amex/Mastercard pages of the IBM/Lenovo site. Most machines can be had with discounts of 10-20% if you use the respective credit card.
