AC Power/Battery Power Problem

#1 Post by dosefx » Sun Jun 27, 2004 1:59 pm

I'm new to this forum, so I don't know if this issue has ever been posted and I'm not sure if this is an issue with Windows XP or the Thinkpad itself.

But, I bought a T23 Thinkpad off my buddy and I like it alot; However, unlike notebooks I've had in the past, when I disconnect the AC Power cord the thinkpad still says that it is charging in the notification area (power meter); even though it displays the amount of charge (0-100%). Also, it often doesn't charge to 100%. It sometimes will hang on 97% and then if I restart it, it will say 100% (this is with it charging).

I've tried to update the drivers, since the notebook originally came with windows 2000; specifically, the power management drivers and also the battery maximiser. Still, my notebook always says that it is on AC Power.

I wish I had the original documentations so that I could refer to them, but unfortunately I don't.

Also, is it normal for the battery symbol to be on constantly even when it is not charging? (the one to the bottom right of the screen when open) It seems as if this causes my battery to rapidly lose power when it is not on and not plug in (in 3-4 hrs of not using and not being plugged in the power meter goes down to about 90%).

All I know, is that I really like this notebook. i just wish I could fix this minor problem because it is really bothering me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My T21 always seems to take a few minutes to 'realise' the power input has changed - I put it down to being a bit retarded, having had a bad childhood etc. It seems to change over eventually though.

I thought that might be the problem, but i've let the battery drain completely about 10 times now without it realizing that it is on battery and not AC power.

I forgot to mention that my T23 originally came with Windows 2000. The person I bought it from installed Windows XP on it.

When I was reading on the IBM site about upgrading this machine to windows XP, it mentioned an IBMTOOLS folder. I don't have this folder; therefore, when the IBM site gives updates to the file contain within this folder, they are no use to me since I don't have the original files installed.

Do you think this could be the root of my problem with the battery and ac power? Or do you think that I am wasting my time?

Also, If someone had this folder, would it be possible (if it were sent to me) to install these drivers on to my T23, or do they require installation files?

I appreciate any help. :P

Did you ever figure out the cause? I have this same problem with my T40. I tried updating the BIOS and that didn't help at all.
