Hibernation problems/T-42p help
For some reason I cannot get into hibernation mode anymore. I used to before.
This is a used thinkpad and there was a previous user account on this which I recently deleted along with all the files. Could that be the reason I cannot hibermate?
When I hit the hibernate button it goes into stand by,
When I got to power option under control panel, and enable the hibernation, it says " Access is denied" and on top it says "power policy manager unable to reserve hibernation file."

I also recently installed service pack 2, would have anything to do with my hibernation file.
This is the message I get when I try to enable hibernation. And this is a computer administrator account

By typing the error-phrase to google, I was able to get multiple threads discussing this, perhaps you should review them:Thinkpad wrote:I also recently installed service pack 2, would have anything to do with my hibernation file.

Some mention Alcohol software, some suggest command-line deleting of the file, etc.

Defintely not, I suggest you read/gaze through every one of those articles Google points out in the first few pages. This forum is hardly a place for generic Windows' peculiarities, hence I doubt you'll find answers or such threads here.Thinkpad wrote:^^ thanks.
I just updated the bios and other power management utilities; still cannot create a hibernation file.
Do I have do a fresh install?
Or possibility two, just give Microsoft a call, look it up at their website, a local number I mean.

Check for C:\hiberfil.sys, you will have to make the following changes to Windows Explorer, select tools, folder options, View tab:
- select Show hidden files and folders
- remove check from Hide protected operating system files
If the file exist delete it, change back Windows Explorer options. Now try to enable Hibernation.

I found a hibernation file under C:, but im unable to delete it and it has 0kb. Hibernation is still disabled.
It says it is being used by another process.

IBM tells me because of the service pack 2, I have to rebuild the computer, i.e do a fresh system installdvorak wrote:Defintely not, I suggest you read/gaze through every one of those articles Google points out in the first few pages. Before doing that (a) boot to safe mode command prompt only and try to delete hiberfil.sys and, if that doesn't work, boot to repair console with a Windows XP CD and delete hiberfil.sys.

Yeah, that sounds like a common answer from them.Thinkpad wrote:IBM tell me me because of the service pack 2, I have to rebuild the computer, i.e do a fresh system install :?
I'll repeat, call Microsoft, tell them your Windows won't hibernate, and that's it. Of course the details about error messages, but no need to tell them what IBM told etc.

I called microsoft up, they said IBM needs to deal with it, because I did not buy the software individually from them.dvorak wrote:Yeah, that sounds like a common answer from them.Thinkpad wrote:IBM tell me me because of the service pack 2, I have to rebuild the computer, i.e do a fresh system install

I did the safe mode boot, still cannot delete the file.
I have the recovery CD's should I just redo it?
Im pretty sure the service pack 2 is the culprit.

Hehe, I suspected this, that's why I said don't tell them more than they need to know, just give them another call, and don't mention more than they need to know, doesn't matter to them if it's a laptop or a desktop, same Windows, same problems.
If need be, just lie, hell of a simpler than reinstalling everything.

Or option 2, use some program (Process Explorer from Sysinternals e.g) and close the handle for that file, then delete.GomJabbar wrote:Try my tip HERE to delete hiberfil.sys.
I often use it to get rid of some avis that won't go otherwise :)

I take it, my previous tip didn't help.
Here is something I copied from Windows Help & Support when I did a search on hibernation. It mentions hiberfil.sys farther down.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefileComputer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options
Description
Determines whether the virtual memory pagefile is cleared when the system is shut down.
Virtual memory support uses a system pagefile to swap pages of memory to disk when they are not used. On a running system, this pagefile is opened exclusively by the operating system, and it is well protected. However, systems that are configured to allow booting to other operating systems might have to make sure that the system pagefile is wiped clean when this system shuts down. This ensures that sensitive information from process memory that might go into the pagefile is not available to an unauthorized user who manages to directly access the pagefile.
When this policy is enabled, it causes the system pagefile to be cleared upon clean shutdown. If you enable this security option, the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) is also zeroed out when hibernation is disabled on a portable computer system.
Default: Disabled.

I wouldn't do that If I were you, I mean not installing SP2, with all the new worms roaming around exploiting old vulnerabilities. I have SP2 with no problems relating to Hibernation, hence I think it was more of a one-time screw-up.Thinkpad wrote:Well I just restored the computer to factory settings via rescue and restore and hibernation now works. :D
