T43p: cd drive sounds strange

#1 Post by OhnePfand » Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:19 am

I have my new ThinkPad (2668-H8G) for some weeks now and it is great!
Although I almost had to cry when I had to give away that much money...
But now I am happy again :-) Much better than the Inspiron I used before!

There is just one strange thing I noticed:
The CD/DVD drive sometimes sounds like it's trying to find a track - some "clicking and humming" as if the step motor can't find the right position.

This only happens when I put in an audio CD and listen to it and it only starts after 10 or 20 minutes. I experienced it with 3 CDs now and also when I use ExactAudioCopy (MP3 ripping tool).

Everything else works fine.

When it happens I eject the CD and re-inserted it. Then I can continue at the same track without problems!
...?

What's that? Can someone explain that? Should the drive be repaired ?

I'd call IBM on that!
Occasionally modern hi-speed Cd Readers have trouble 'slowing down' to 1x.
Stress that it's intermittent but doesen't matter what audio CD
If you get lucky and get someone who really wants to help they will replace the drive.

Yup, that's definitly something you'll have to call about. I had a similar problem two weeks ago with my CD-RW/DVD drive. Basically the drive could not read ANY cd, despite being able to read and play DVDs just fine. I was told by an IBM tech that the optical drive uses a separate head for audio and video. Called this in on a Monday at around noon and had a new drive with pre-paid shipping for the defective unit the very next day!
