Odd Noise with GCC-4242N

Hi,

I wonder if anyone hears an odd 'grinding' noise (or a harsh sound) from their combo drive (GCC-4242N) when the drive stops spinning?

I hear this noise no matter what media I use. I called IBM, they shipped me another drive (same model) but I hear the same sound. The tech support I called said they'd never heard the sound and advised me to take it to the nearest service center.

Before I did so, I'm curious if any other owners of Thinkpads with the same drive model had observed this.

Are you sure it comes from the drive ? Have you try it in another machine ? Ask some of your friend to check that sound. I always asks my sister, if she hears it then it is a warranty issue otherwise it is a mine phantashm

Yup - comes from the drive.

Haven't got access to another T42 unfortunately :~( I listened to my sister's R51 and it makes a much softer sound than mine...
