Odd chirping or beeping sound from 7200rpm drive

#1 Post by fritz_the_blank » Fri Aug 19, 2005 2:16 pm

Hello--

I have a T42 with the 7200 rpm 60gig drive. Not always, but quite frequently, I hear a soft chirp or pseudo-beep each time that the hard drive indicator light flashes.

Has anyone seen this? Is my drive dying?

Thank you,

FtB

Hello!

Yes, I also hear a very high tone (I would guess > 12kHz), for around 1s, on harddisk activity around every 10s. I guess this is some kind of calibration.

New Notebook: T43p 2668-G7U, Drive is a Hitachi HTS726060M9AT00.

Ciao,

Thank you for posting.

Some sort of calibration? I am not sure that I understand. I wonder if this happens on all t42s with the 7200 rpm 60 gig drive. It concerns me also that it is only a recent phenonema--it never did this during the first year that I owned it.

Yes, harddisks do some head calibration from time to time, but it looks like that this is too often ...

My drive is new. Anyone has the same high tones on a (new) Hitachi 7200 RPM drive?

I would also say most users don't even hear such high tones :-(

I can hear hi-pitched squeals easily and there are none from my 7200 rpm Hitachi Travelstar. I don't think you should assume noise is happening on my machine and I just don't hear it. Same with the fan - it is quiet (although always on). ... JD Hurst

I was afraid that you were going to say that. For me the question becomes is this just a nuisance or a harbinger of bad things to come....

I am also experiencing this chirp on the 100GB 7200RPM Hard Drive. Mine is very loud, to the point where I think that it is connected to a speaker and volume is up.

Same here, I find my drive seems to be lacking some "lube". There appears to be a weird correlation between the day of the week, the temperature and my Thinkpad's mood as to when and how loud the squeaking becomes.

I asked my uncle, a car mechanic, what to do when my car starts making strange noises, he replied "Turn up the radio".

My drive still seems to be working fine, and the sound remains intermittent.

I'm staying tuned.....

I just updated to the new bios and embedded controller for my T30 and since then I seem to hear my Hitachi 7200 rpm drive making some new and different intermittent sounds that could sometimes be described as chirping. Seems to have quieted down a bit today, but noticing there still seems to be more hd activity than there was before.

My Hitachi 60GB 7200rpm is very-very quiet and doesn't have high pitch sound.
