I don't think there is a specific amount of time that you should charge the batteries. Charge them until the Battery Maximizer gauge reads 100%. The battery is "intelligent" and will stop charging when it reaches full capacity.
To extend battery life, try to avoid discharging below 10%, and never drain the battery all the way to 0%. Lithium Ion batteries can be damaged if they are fully discharged. For example, I lost 4 watt/hours of capacity when I discharged to 1%

I am wondering how long I should charge my battery in the first times.

What strategy do you suggest to maximize the life of ibm t42 batteris???
No, you don't have to remove the battery from its slot when it is full. You don't have to worry about overcharging the battery because it knows when to stop charging.

When I am at home and I plug the laptop into AC and my battery is full charged, should I have to remove the battery from its slot???
I would guess about 4 hours if you turn the screen brightness down a bit.
