How to connect T41 & T42 to Composite only TV ?

#1 Post by arion » Sat Aug 20, 2005 1:12 pm

How do I connect the ThinkPad which has S-Video out to my TV (PAL) which only has Composite input ?

I used a S-Video to Composite cable that came with my ASUS Video card.

On my T41 I get colour but with some green lines diagionally acrros the picture.

On my T42 I get no lines but the picture is in Black and White only.

Thanks.

I think Radio Shack sells what you need. It's a small box that converts either way from what I've seen of it.

look for Radio Shack "RF Modulator", thats the name of the box, it has s-video, cable in and gives out antenna out. it is $29.99

Do they have Radio Shacks in Australia? I don't know if a RF converters are different for NTSC and PAL anyway.

Ask the question on the forums at dvdrhelp.com, I recall seeing a discussion about it where the person had a TV set in England, your issues might be similar.

LOL Yeah I guess I shouldn't post right after the Vicodin kicks in!!!

Thanks for pointing that out. Actually I went to the Radio Shack site HOPING they had stores outside the US but I could find none. I did find what he/she is looking for though!

Up until a very months ago Radio Shack gear was sold thru Tandy in Australia but they were taken over and mergerd so they drop the Radio Shack brand gear.

There are a few other posts with these problems but no one has posted the solution even thought some people said they got it going.

The problem is that almost no TVs, VCRs etc have SCART or S-Video at all just composite so no one must actually use the TV out on laptops then.

No, no no.. You really don't want a modulator.

An RF Modulator makes "RF" signals -- radio frequency that you "tune" with your television. That's a huge quality loss and a big hassle.

The S-Video connection on the side of the computer gives you two signals, Chroma and Luma -- those normally go to the S-Video input and give better quality than Composite video, which combines both onto one signal.

However -- many (most?) S-Video outputs can be configured to run Composite on just one of their signals (Luma), since the circuitry is the same. I use my video card like this without any trouble.

You need an adapter cable that has S-Video (DIN) on one end, and Composite (RCA) on the other. It's just wire -- no electronics.

Then, you have to configure the video card driver to push Composite Video out the port, even though it's an S-Video port. That will combine the two signals onto the one wire you're using.

I've done this on three video cards, but never the ThinkPad.

Check out this link: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=14218

Also check this out (TV must be connected): Right click on an open area of the desktop, choose Properties > Settings > Advanced > Displays > TV > Format. Set format for your country or PAL.

I am using an 4 pin S-Video to Composite cable that came with my ASUS Video card already.

How do I configure the drivers to tell it to use Composite as oposed to the defualt S-Video ?

Also Setting my Country to Australia and PAL B does not fix the problems.

Installing the Omega Drivers fixed all the problems.
