nm, let thread die

#1 Post by MikeZ » Sat Aug 20, 2005 3:38 pm

Im trying to install a new stick of ram on my t42.

I watched the video and proceeded to remove the 4screws. First 3 came off fine, but the 4th one (top left, deepest) was very deep and it's frustrating me!!

I've gotten it to come up about half way, but now the face of the screw looks all dull :x :x :x :x

I can't seem to bring it anymore nor can I tighten it back...
Has anyone experienced a similar experience? Any suggestions?

Am i screwed? I cant seem to remove my keyboard, which probably means I cant install my new ram

thanks.

You're replacing the old RAM rather than adding more? If you're just adding more to what you have, look under the buisiness-card sized trapdoor and see if that's empty, first.

I've searched for installing ram before I tried it, and the video was posted, thats why I followed it. Thanks mdarnton! I did open the business size's latch and placed in my ram. But it doesn't seem to be reading it (system still saids 256ram)...any ideas? thanks

I dont think I installed the memory correctly.

After openign the hatch, I can stick the memory in (at an angle), but I can seem to push it or snap it down - the two silver things are in the way...

Should I just keep pushing the ram against the silver latches or is there another approach?

I've tried the ibmsupport instructions, but I still cant seem to do it. Can someone explain the steps or link me to another tutorial (or video perhaps?) I've tried searching the forums, but there are too many threads that comes up. thanks

I just installed my ram yesterday. Like the directions say, come in at a 20 degree angle and push it in first...what you should see is that the back of notch in the memory should make contact with the holder. When this happens, the grooves cut into the ram on both outer edges should be lined up with those silver hatches. If they arent, then you havent slid the ram in far enough..after they line up, push the ram down and it should snap in with the silver things holding it down.

thanks a lot for the advices guys. I finally got it. The problem was that I didnt use enough force in forcing it in (thats why the silver things were in the way). STupid me!

You're lucky that ram did not touch connectors otherwise you could expect short circuit. I've seen it many times on the desktop machines. A lot of people don't use enough force and module is not plugged-in but too close to the connectors.
Let's go'n'restart :-)
