T43 Shopping: No "Thinkpad Protection" for home us

#1 Post by trikster2 » Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:10 pm

Looking at getting the wife a T42/T43 and trying to compare against an equivalent dell "complete care"

When I try to add IBMs version of "complete care" and at home service (which are reaonably priced on the dell) I get a "no soup for you!" message from the IBM configuration checker.

What's the deal?

ThinkPlus are primarily available for machines normally used for business, professional or trade purposes rather than personal, family or household purposes. For machines that are used for personal, family or household purposes please choose the option with "Extended Service Contract" as shown in the part number description.

ServicePacs and PC protection services are for business or professional use only. ServicePac and PC protection coverage begins on the date of the original invoice and may overlap the warranty.

They tend to list them twice. Do you not see ThinkPad Protection 3 YR ONSITE? It should be further down than the ServicePacs.

Also, a link to the site might be helpful - so that I can point it out to you if there are multiple options.

Also be aware of the fact that Thinkpad Protection is only offered in certain states. I was told that it is not offered in California....I don't know why and I don't know how to get around this...maybe I can't.

STS,

I've posted how I got around it in the past. At the beginning of the year, they said no TPP to New York State residents. Ask your rep to place the TPP in a different order (it can be ordered within the first 30 days) and get someone with a billing/shipping address outside of your area (I placed the order in my CC, but specified the Billing/Shipping to my friend in New Jersey). The TPP will be linked to your unit.

You'll have to contact them about that though as the rep has to place two different orders.

Oh I see...didn't know that. Well thanks for that information. Now does that mean that whoever's address I use, pays for it (as in does it have to be their billing address?).

STS,

Depends on the Credit Card Company. AMEX, MC both allow you to add an "authorized address" for a period of no longer than 30 days. If you add the address, you should have no problem. The TPP package is just a UPS Letter envelope with the Terms and Conditions.

Ok, forgive me if is a stupid question. So, ordering it with a California card/account/billing address but shipping it to an out-of-state account will not work...correct?

So i need to either have someone out of state order it or do what you said with the certain credit card companies (though I don't have cards with the company you mentioned...I'll have to ask around). I personally think the TPP is important, especially since I'm a klutz.

Depends. call IBM and ask them what your options are. I know New York required Billing & Shipping to be outside of New York. Califorina might be different.

YES

I do see that but when I add it to my cart and "check configuration" the website specificaly says that service is for business and not home use. The website specifies that only the "extended" option is for home use.

Does IBM/Lenovno honor the service if a home user purchases it?

" For machines that are used for personal, family or household purposes please choose the option with "Extended Service Contract" as shown in the part number description. "

But a big nevermind. Thanks for pointing out the service is not valid in sunny california where I will be shipping the laptop. Sigh I guess it's back to da dell again.....
