Thinking about used Thinkpad T30 "certified used equipm

#1 Post by Kyocera » Thu Aug 25, 2005 6:48 pm

Been thinking about getting a used laptop from IBM, specifically the
T30 81U - T236681U, $775 US. Want to give my T42 a rest from the everyday work thing. Just wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with this aspect of IBM. And if there is any issues with the T30. I have read a lot of the posts about the T30, gets hot, heavier, memory card slot, etc.. I use mine to connect to customer networks, printers, scanners, load firmware, troubleshoot connectivity, load drivers etc.,never play games, music. Just need something sturdy.

Thanks.

I second the "why" question... but in any case if you want to buy one my opinion is they aren't at all bad machines. I'd own one if my budget was only in that $600-750 neighborhood. The also have a serial port if you need one without a dock, and cheap "extras" are available. I've had my 1st experience with one recently (see my post in the sale or trade section) and it's favorable. To address your concerns I think the IBM refurb would probably have your memory issue repaired. As for the heat and heft, well mine (1.8GHz) don't seem too big a difference in the heat factor from my personal T40's, but in size I think it's best described as an X31 on steroids. It's different than the T2x and T4x as they seem a progression, with the T30 being a temporary side-step because of Intel's chip direction at that time. This is only my opinion and I hope it helps.

The why is in the post, to give my way more expensive and way cooler T42 a break. I use it every day in customers offices troubleshooting, I've dropped it once in a parking lot, another time a customer tripped on the ethernet cable I had connected and it flew on the floor. I can definately assure you that the active protection works.

Just need something I won't be so paranoid about chunking into the car (I do the IBM case with the shock pads) or dropping. It does get me a lot of compliments too, but I want to keep it more for home stuff than work. And also the theft factor.

Brainpicker, appreciate the low-down, it sounds like what I need. Just need a workhorse, nothing snazzy.
