whenever i start up my thinkpad (a straight boot, not from hibernation), svchost takes up 100% cpu cycle for a good 2 minutes.
im pretty sure its some wireless thing but i dont know how to fix it so it doesnt take so long.
any suggestions?

If you have Wireless Zero Configuration service disabled, try reenabling it. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
You can also go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, and check for any event errors during bootup. Click on the error, then on the link (while online) to get information on the error from microsoft.com.

svchost lags alot when i switc wireless configurations, is that the ibm configuration service? (its no longer just on bootup).

Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab. Click the option that Automatic Updates is turned off. It's well known MS-Bug:
