My T42 arrived! - surprise with CS and 7500

#1 Post by cklchoi » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:22 am

After months of researching, I've finally got my hands on a Thinkpad. It's the 2373WK8. The build quality is so nice and I got no dead pixels :D I got a nice deal on it too, where it comes with an extra 6-cell battery, ac adapter and lock.

What REALLY surprised me was when I tried to load up CS:Source. Seeing as how this notebook only has the Radeon 7500 I thought the only thing that'd work would be 1.6 - Lo and behold, source runs! at about 40fps, 1024x768 all settings on low. Even running on dx7 it doesnt look half bad at all. 8) Cheers to the guys at Valve; the source engine is definately flexible.

Thats good news. I'm looking forward to the source version of the better Half-Life Mod, Day of Defeat. :)

I have a T42 as well..with the specs listed below. So I'm hoping the DoD:source engine is just as flexible!..DoD is about the only game I play nowadays...so if it can run that, I am good to go!

Thanks for the input.
T42 (2373N3U): 1.8 Ghz, 1.5 GB DDR, ATI Radeon 9600, 60 GB 7200 rpm HD, 15" SXGA (1400x1050) screen, CD-RW/DVD-ROM (combo), Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader.

I see a lot of these gaming threads, and I figured I would chime in that my laptop (specs below) actually plays WoW in 1400x1050 quite decently, even with the IBM driver.

Cool, we basically have the same exact computer...just screen size seems to be the largest difference. Good to hear that, despite not selling my life to WoW...I've seen that game ruin the lives of many college students.

Yep the N3U and M3U are identical except for the screen size and chassy. You must have upgraded the ram by 1gig as well :). As for WoW, im not a big time game anymore but this game has me hooked. I decided when I bought it that I would only play twice a week (its now Wednesday and Sunday) so I'm playing about 5hrs a week which sounds bad except that mostly replaces my TV time.

Gaming on my T30 is pretty nice, too.
So far, I've tried CS/CS:S and WoW and they both run quite well.

I was worried because Blizz claims that the minreq for WoW is 32MB of VRAM, but it installed and runs fine. It actually runs better on my thinkpad than it does on my workstation at work! (Athlon1200/GF2MX-32M)

Yeah, HL2 runs quite well on most laptop. Now try Battlefield2 on it ;)

I have the IBM driver installed for my FireGLT2 128MB, does anyone know if the ATI drivers are faster?

ATI's? Probably not but you may want to try the omega drivers:

I have friends that have eeked out some FPS from them, not much though.

Oh yeah, I definitely got the extra 1 GB and its very nice. Yeah 5 hrs a weeks is absolutely nothing compared to what some of my friends play....5 hrs in one day, easy. So I stayed away from it. Only play Half Life mods and Day of Defeat in particular.

Heh, at the height of my brother's gaming, he would easily play 12 hours a day, more on the weekends.

His game of choice was and still is UT'99

When counter-strike first came out, I didn't play much during the week, but I'd pretty much stay up all weekend to play.
I stopped playing CS for the a long time, I still can't get used to the way the gameplay is now.

Good man, great game. Most addictive game IMO since Ultima IV.
T30 (236641U) now, purchasing a T42/43 in the next week.

Haha..yeah it can get insane. 5 hrs per day isn't much either but couple that with being in school and majoring in aero engineering...well something's gotta give and unfortunately for some friends, it ended up being school. They'll be repeating a few classes I tell you...I stayed with Day of Defeat ..a game that is really great but easy to get off of..especially if the server you routinely play on empties out on you. :evil:

Hey guys, now that DOD:Source has come out for a while, have any of you T-series owners installed Steam/CS:S/DOD:S?

I'm wondering how the x300 graphics would stack up in the above two games - as far as I know, the x300 is equivalent to approx. a Radeon 9600 correct?

I have played all of those but DoD: Source...Excellent playability

Framerates in excess of 40fps with the IBM Drivers and 1024x768 with 2xAA

Also, it handles UT2004 and Wolfenstein (Both RtCW and ET) quite well with high performance framerates. I am really quite impressed when it comes to gaming on my T43. :)

That sounds great! I will go ahead 'n load Steam on ... something to do in the spare time or when I travel abroad.

Even with 2xAA! that's impressive. 8)

Of course, you don't play with the trackpoint nor the pad, do you? ;)

<CS 1.4 Netspex mode on>
I R HI LVL; SO HARDCORE, I PLAYZ WITH TRACKPOINT ALL TEH TIME no n00bz touchhpadz for the leet hax0rz.
<CS 1.4 Netspex mode off>

;)

Actually I use the mouse, although I have been able to play abit with the Trackpoint...Forget using the Touchpad in any FPS. Also, you might want to quit explorer.exe and take away some of the backends that are running too.
