Quick question about the issue with the T4x laptops and having to replace their motherboards:
Is this a defect in the motherboard alone, and this will fix the problem once and for all? Or is it due to CPU and/or GPU overheating?
I play games on it, so it probably gets a little warm (which is an understatement). I just got it back from IBM, and I don't want to toast this new motherboard too...
Thanks,
Rich
T4x Motherboard Replacement Question
Rich,
When I contacted IBM Technical support they also recommonded to replace motherboard, and that's maximum they can do. I didn't agree to it coz my laptop was 35 days old ( now around 46 days).
if you carefully examine the bottom you will find it heat most in center, right below the ultra nav pad to trackpoint. if you look at motherboard (by removing keyboard and palmrest you will find three chips in a row.
One is south bridge then GPU and then northbridge. CPU doesn't get that much.
replacing the motherboard won't help coz it's Bridge problem they run on 533 MHz all time and get hot. either IBM has to provide cooling to those chips or come up with some other solution to undervolt it when system idles something similar to intel speedstep.

Well, after 2 hours, the new motherboard that IBM just replaced has crapped out just like it did before I sent it in for repairs. Exact same behavior: video goes out 1-2 minutes after startup, the sine wave and battery indicators are the only things lit up, and the only thing I can do is power down.
To make matters worse, while the machine was still up I noticed that my Radeon 9600 was gone and there was Radeon 7500 instead.
Just a warning -- when you get stuff back from repair, make sure you get back all of the components you're supposed to!
