My laptop got sucked into the Customs black hole

#1 Post by fefland » Thu Sep 01, 2005 4:43 pm

The first time I ordered my T43, it took about 4 days to get. I have to return it so ordered another on. Ordered last Friday 8/26, not in stock. Surprised to get the shipping email Tuesday night. Yesterday, 8/31, morning saw that it was pciked up from Hong Kong. Then saw the infamous status that there was a Customs delay. This status appeared before it even got to the US. Then Alaska, then California import scan and then nothing. It woulbe nice if it said exception, or hold, or something. So I called and was told it was in Denver and being held. If this is true, why not a message that it is held there? Like the subject says, it has been sucked into the Customs black hole. I really hope it is not held too long. :(

I'm in the same boat (see my posts elsewhere). About a week now. UPS told me to ask Len-Oh-No! to help them get it released as Len-Oh-No! has been ignoring their daily requests for assistance with customs deficieancies. Len-Oh-No! claims they did nothing wrong and so it sits. Funny though how I ordered 2 of these and 1 got through customs right away (then got mis-sorted and put on a plane to Alaska... now lost) but the other sits.

It could be worse I guess. I say a prayer hourly for the folks affected by Katrina. With all the problems I had this week I still feel blessed.

I agree with you totally. You hit the nail on the head. Me not having a replacement laptop pales in comparison to having nothing. I am praying for them as well. Makes you re-think what is important.

Spot on. Globalisation has actually meant that many products/consumer goods cross more borders. The borders are indeed still present (contrary to what many proponents of globalisation suggest), and what crosses is now (and some argue more than ever) heavily regulated.

I was told that when the package goes through customs that it is opened. Does anyone know if they open the box and actually take the laptop out and turn it on? This sounds like it could be grounds to return if anything at all is wrong with it. There is no gaurantee that they don't knock it around or, heaven forbid, drop it. I guess I am just being paranoid.

I was not being negative or anything, just realistic. I live in Canada and am well used to customs delays. It once took the clueless people at FedEx three weeks to get an envelope across the border from the US into Canada. Americans are now having to get used to what many of us have experienced for years. Again, not a negative comment, just realistic.

These customs delays have become the rage with X41T Tablet orders.
Something has to be different than when IBM themselves did the importing from China:
Perhaps the factory or factories being used by Lenovo are not in the "free trade" zone in China???

Actually came today. Only one day in customs. Not too bad, just screwed up my schedule.
