Docking station and 9-cell battery

#1 Post by dshechter » Tue Jun 29, 2004 10:16 am

I just bought a "certified used" Thinkpad T41p (2373XQX) - it is a remarkable machine, and in outstanding condition, it looks new to me. The (9-cell) battery had 6 cycles of use, so I figure I basically have a new machine for $1899 (SPP price, quite a good deal).

So my question is:
Is there a docking station that can be used with the 9-cell battery that protrudes from the back of the laptop? Can the 2631 model be used? There are many of those available on ebay for quite good prices.

Thanks for any insight.

David

No, the 2631 does not work, the battery does not fit and USB 2.0 would not be possible. You need at least port replicator II.

Thanks for the quick response. Does the replicator/dock II allow for the use of the 9-cell battery? From the pictures on ibm's website it is hard to tell, and there is no information in the pdf manual about the battery.

The mini-dock (287810U) for my T41 has a spring-loaded flap in that swings down for the extended battery. It's hard to see from the pics on the IBM website, but you can faintly make it out - it's the same shape as the extended battery. I think all the docks and port replicators designed for the T41 series have this...

The Port Replicator II does allow the use of the 9-cell battery.

I'm not sure what the exact difference between the Port Replicator II and the MiniDock is, but the standard dock gives you an extra bay.

I'm very happy with the port replicator - all I use it for is so I don't have to manually connect all the cables when I'm at my desk.

The replicator does indeed allow for the 9-cell battery. As for the differences between the p.r. and the mini-dock, the mini-dock has integrated power supply and a 4-port usb2 hub. Oh, and it costs $100 more.

Well - I wouldn't call it an "integrated" power supply. I comes with a 120W external supply - like the 72W supply that comes with the T-series - but bigger and with a different connector. I think it is the PS from the G series.

different output that you shouldn't use directly on your T42?

Different plug - looks like a mouse connector - it won't plug into a T42.
