Wireless Card Range?

#1 Post by Biker2679 » Sat Sep 03, 2005 4:33 pm

What is the T series wireless card with the best range? I currently have the 2200B/G and it works well connecting to both my WRT54G and the Cisco 1200s at my school. However, the range is not as good as some of my friends laptops and I want to know if upgrading to one of the IBM cards will give me better range. I have searched the forums and most people say that the IBM Series II cards are better then the 2200, but I wanted to know there is any testing or first hand experience that confirms this. I have a T40- 2373-19U. Thanks.

If you want more range, get yourself a 200mw card and one of those rubber duck antennas. Both can be found on ebay.

AFAIK, there are only 802.11b 200mw cards, no g.

I keep my netopia router in the basement, and the other day, two floors up, my T41 with IBM 11 a/b/g card was registering 95 percent signal, and a client T42 right beside it with Intel 2200 bg card was registering 70 percent. Otherwise, all the same level of software. I like the IBM card, but the Intel card with newest drivers is decent if that is what you have. ... JD Hurst

Anyone else have an opinion on this? I think I might just order the Wifi II from IBM and test it myself.

I get about 15% better reception with my IBMa/b/g II card compared to some Intel 2200bg cards I've tried, but AFAIK the IBM (Atheros) cards draw slightly more power.

Intel's latest driver seems much more stable, so definitely try that first before replaceing the WiFi card.

Eat your heart out! 8)

I just read today in the October 2005 issue of Maximum PC: "Several college students from Ohio recently won a Wi-Fi shootout in Nevada by establishing Wi-Fi connectivity between two computers, with full 11 Mb/s bandwidth, at a distance of 125 miles. It was a new record for an unamplified connection."
