CD Burning Problems EDIT: Going to EZServ
CD Burning Problems EDIT: Going to EZServ
I was wondering if anyone ever experienced a problem like this, or what this problem could be caused by.
On my T42p, for the last few weeks, I haven't been able to burn the vast majority of CDs using the IBM RecordNow! software. I am using Sony 700 MB CD-Rs, but have also tried using FujiFilm.
When the burn fails, the CD software says I cannot reuse the same CD, but loading the CD on my friend's computer allows them to record on the CD, so I am pretty sure it is not a problem with the CD media.
I also tried swapping the CD drive itself from the T42p unit (IBM sent me a Used Part), with the same results.
I would rather not send the unit back, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any other possible reasons why this could be occuring?

I ran into a simular issue on a desktop machine. After I updated the firmware on the drive, the drive would not work with my backup software, although it still worked with Roxio. I restored the firmware to the previous version, but still no dice.
A couple of months later I did a clean install, and everything worked again. I read somewhere at the time, that drive firmware upgrades also make changes in the registry, and sometimes the changes aren't properly implemented.
My guess is that a registry entry is faulty, or possibly you have a missing or corrupted driver. You could try uninstalling the CD drive, and let windows reinstall it on boot up. You could also try uninstalling the Record Now software, then reinstall it. Search Access IBM for the procedure to reinstall factory software.
Maybe someone else here has some other ideas.

Now this is strange.
I uninstalled the drive and shut down my computer. Took out the drive when it was off and turned it back on. Once Windows reloaded I put the drive in, and it went through the "Installing New Hardware..." process.
I was able to burn one CD successfully, but then everything else failed. Repeating the process doesn't help either.
I am going to try reinstalled IBM RecordNow! to see if that fixes the problem.
EDIT: I installed Nero and here is the error that it is pulling (from the log). Any suggestions?

I have had problems with certain CD/R's. You might try downloading Smartburn from Lite-On IT. With it you can check to see the likely manufacturer of the CD, the dye used, and other information. Check to see if the CD's you created successfully are using the same dye as the ones you had the problems with. I had some Verbatim disks that were made with 2 different dyes. One worked good and the other didn't. The good one was made in Taiwan, and the problem one was made in India.
While the above could be your problem, it just might be your burner. You can try cleaning the lens using a CD cleaning kit. You may need to just replace the CD writer.

Thanks. That's what I have been reading. I already got a second drive from IBM (a used part, however), and both have the same problem.
I thought that SONY and FUJIFILM were both good manufacturers of CD-Rs, but I will try a third source. The successful and unsuccessful burns are from the same set, so the dyes should match.

That is usually a media issue. What is says on the outside of the box is usually no indication of who makes the discs and whether they are any good. Most often the discs are made by other companies with the brand name slapped on. Anything marked Made in Japan are usually good. Taiyo Yuden makes very good CD-Rs. You can get them at places like Rima.com. Good Luck.

Still unable to get it to work. I have tried using several more CDs and it does not work 99% of the time (sometimes, once in a long while, it will work).
I have been able to determine that it is not a user-specific registry problem, as I created a new user and it also failed. It could be a system registry problem.
I have also tried reseating my extra RAM chip.
I think I am going to have to backup everything and wipe the drive and see if it works. If it does, then I know something in my configuration was causing the problem.

Just to update everyone...
Today, I went into R&R and restored the system to factory install state. The drive does not read many (if any) cds.
Also, I put in the Windows XP setup disk (slipstream which I had made and worked in the past) and on startup, the system just froze. It does recognize that there is a CD in there, but nothing else.
This happens with both CD drives and with multiple CDs.
Called EZServ and they are dispatching a box to me. Hopefully, it will be here tomorrow (but probably not). As a surprise, here is what the online EZServ lookup states:
I figure that if they have to replace the motherboard or HDD, they are going to use new parts, right? Also, if they put used parts in there, do they disclose that when you get the unit back? (I had to LCD replaced earlier this year, and I assume it was new because there was nothing else to determine otherwise).

Surprising that they have Battery Warranty on there. Glad to see TPP being listed, because last time, my system was held up for 2-3 days because they couldn't determine if it has TPP on it.09/12 2037 _BATT WAR ENDS:01/04/2006_DEPOT & CSO:CUST COVERED_FOR ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE_REPAIRS.CHARGE BKQ PROTECT_CANT READ CD'S AFTER NEW_DRIVE_*_SE

I used the Factory Restore (not Rescue and Recovery). The laptop arrived and completed repairs yesterday by EZServ. When I get it back (I presume on Tuesday since I don't have a tracking number yet - it finished at 5:19 p.m. on Friday ET).
