If you need Apple for a specific purpose, fine, but the reasoning above was suspect, may I say, even incorrect.

/me chuckles - NVA30 running XP Pro 24x7 for three years with no crashes, no hacks, no viruses, no trojans, no problems - 100 percent stable.

you are right. it was incorrect. But please understand me: what would you do after 7 Dell Notebooks and 2 ThinkPads in one year?

Concerning the operating systems of Apple vs. Win XP Pro: if you install win xp pro without any firewall and virus-security tools like F-Secure or Norton, I am pretty sure that you will have viruses ans spywares during the first contact with the internet. But if you install Mac OS X Tiger only, you will never need to install any security-tools. It is much more saver than Windows. I think so... Maybe I am not right, but we will see

Use Linux (or linspire) on your T4x and all your virus problems are gone! And if you must run some windows app, use VMWare :)

I think if you use Zone alarm and avoid outlook express, you will be fine and rock stable with WXP PRo.

Also soon you will have OSX for Intel :) So its better to invest in a T series than those cute looking heavy apples with less than stellar service (remember you still have IBM support for your Lenovo machines). An apple technician told me that Apples do fail and its unfair to compare the service levels with IBM as IBM is so huge and they can parts much more quickly. But other than IBM.

I have heard that it is possible to get a virus on a Windows machine by hooking it up without protection, so I understand the comments. I work behind a hardware firewall, so while I am setting up a machine, no one can see it, let alone attack it. But I would never hook up an unprotected machine directly to the Internet. Point taken there.

An inexperienced user will have a hard time to turn off the XP firewall – it is there by default. About anti-virus software: I use heavily two XP PCs and maintain two more. I have been Windows user for about 10 years. Never had Trojan, virus, never been hacked. My anti-virus software is OFF all the time and I check my PCs once every few months. No problems. It takes a little common sense to keep your computer safe. Theoretically, you can get hacked by a very smart hacker that uses Windows vulnerability for which MS has not released a fix yet. Well, a brick can fall on your head, too, while you are reading this.

My wife has very little experience with computers but a lot of common sense. Her computer was never hacked, either.

Well, my home computers are behind a router but my corporate one is directly connected to the network.

Without a firewall – you will be hacked for sure. A friend of mine reformatted the hard drive, installed Windows (at that time, the firewall was off by default), and connected to the internet. About 15 seconds leter he realized that the PC was connected directly to the WEB and not through the router as usual. He quickly disconnected the cable and checked the computer. It was hacked already. :(

If you want to be absolutely protected – run DOS without a floppy drive.

Guess what, 2% of the market share is just nothing, that's why (for now) u may enjoy the default installation. But, if your are a target, you may kiss your [censored] good bye, independent which OS you are using...
If you are that much conerned about WinXP security, go ahead and install Linux or even OpenBSD (TPs are perfect platform for it).
It seems to me though, you'll have a hard time with it as well, being unable to secure WinXP, doesn't make you a pro in *nix world either.
You can consider calling some security consultant though or talking to some geek around... dunno, but there is no point jumping around with OS X/WinXP/Linux flame, I guess. Good luck.

Fan pulsing

#37 Post by archinloaf » Sat Sep 10, 2005 5:28 pm

I just bought a T43P 14" about 2 weeks ago. I love the laptop, except one thing...the fan (well sometimes).

When there is no ambient noise in the room the fan pisses me off. Mine seems to pulse. That's really the only word I can think of. If the fan stayed at a constant tone it wouldnt bother me but it hums for exactly 5 seconds and then gets louder for about half a second. It does this when I'm not really doing anything CPU or GPU intensive.

For instance all I am doing/have open is 1 firefox window typing this message.

"hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmHMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmHMMmmmmmmmm"

If that makes any sense to anyone.

But if I have the TV on, or am in the office, it doesn't bother me at all. Just when the room is completly silent....except for my pulsing fan.

#42 Post by nikemen » Thu Sep 15, 2005 1:02 pm

All i know, after two years of this is,

on AC, fan is alwasy on. The whirring has stopped, thank you.

But, on battery, I can get the fan to stop. So, it stops. I wish I could get it to stop on AC though.

Same with 2668-75U, though I must says that the fan on my T43 is actually slightly quieter than my T40. The same cycling noise, but the T43 is more of a whisper to the T40's whir.

I don't know why the hell this hasn't been fixed. It's present on my T40, and you'd think that after more than 2 years IBM would have done something about it. Absolutely inexcusable that this problem should exist in an otherwise very fine machine.

I'm hoping that Lenovo moves to a T5x this january, and that these stupid problems with the fan pulsing go away.
