2378DHU vs 2379DJU
Okay, so the subject line tells of my current predicament. I like the DHU, but am wondering whether it is worth the extra money ($156) to get the DJU with the better screen resolution. I'm really not concerned about the additional CPU speed given my uses, just the screen.
Now, in reading over this forum, there has been a fair amount of talk about some screen issues in non-Flexview LCDs. I'm a little confused, so this is why I stopped lurking and registered.
My questions: What are the known problems, and which screens do they affect? Will buying the XGA or the SXGA+ increase my chances of getting an inferior product? Are the problems on both? Just one? Please note that I'm only talking about 14.1" screens. I have no desire for the larger one, since I'll be carrying the thing around NYC on my back for three years.
Further, for someone who will basically be using word and a web browser 90% of the time, will the extra pixels even be worthwhile? Will the screen be noticeably sharper, or just have more real estate?
Thanks for any insight!

Well, the SXGA screen also comes with a more powerful GPU (the Radeon 9000 vs the Radeon 7500). This may not make much difference to you now, but as software gets bigger and more bloated in the years to come, you may find the faster GPU beneficial.

I have the 2378FVU. I took a look at XGA (1024x768) screens and decided that they didn't have enough real estate for me. I went with the SXGA+ and it's great. It gets hard to see when you're out with the sun shining on it, but otherwise I love the screen (and I don't stay out in the sun with it that often
).
I also plan on keeping my laptop, lugging it to and from law school in NYC for the next three years, one of the reasons I went with the 14.1" as opposed to 15.
Currently I plan on using my laptop for the same thing you're using it for. Notes and web browsing. I might swtich it to my primary machine (and use my desktop as a backup), but I didn't purchase it with that in mind. Nonetheless, XGA was too small (real estate wise) for me.
I would recommend doing the following: Stop off at Circuit City, BestBuy, CompUSA or any other place (plenty of them in our area) and take a look at a 14.1" XGA and SXGA+ screen. That will give you an idea of how small the icons are and how much real estate you'll have. The IBM is a pretty sharp screen, great viewing angle. I love it.
Good luck,

IBM ThinkPad T42 (2378-FVU), 14.1" SXGA, ATI 9600, 512MB, 40GB, DVD-ROM/CDRW, 6 cell and 9 cell battery, Waterfield bag (sfbags.com)
I have both the 14" XGA and the 14" SXGA...SXGA wins hands down and is definitely worth the extra money. The screen is sharper since the pixels are closer together. My SXGA is also brighter than my XGA, but that could just be because the XGA is on my T40, which is older...

I used to have the DJU...the SXGA+ screen is worth it...as well as the better graphic card...
Later you can add the other features but never the screen...(well you can do it, but so much pain...)
For later...SXGA+ is much much better than XGA...less scroll less pain...
