T42/T43 and Windows Vista

#1 Post by aamsel » Thu Sep 08, 2005 3:30 pm

Well, probably by the time Windows Vista (Longhorn) hits the shelves, a lot of Thinkpad owners will have purchased new notebooks.

Also, it is a pinch rediculous to be talking about running an OS that is more than a year from release.....

However...assuming that you have one of "today's" T42's or T43's with a 9600 or X300...

The Vista requirements (supposedly) for full video capability are:

DirectX 9.0 capable card, 64MB minimum discrete memory, AGP 8X or PCI-X 8X.

I know that the T42's are 64MB 9600 AGP 4X, and the T43's also fall short of the requirements I believe.

I am assuming that these T42/T43's will not run Vista without running in "XP Compatibility mode".

Would you agree with this, from what you have read?

You can turn off all the fluff in Vista and it should work fine. I don't think I would want an OS that maxes out a GPU.

To reduce your concerns: the difference between AGP 8x and 4x is almost nil when looking at real world performance. My guess is that the T42/43 series will run Windows Vista just fine.

Although we wont be able to run Vista with Aero (XP?) we will be able to use plain Aero or Classic.

I wont be needing Vista any time soon, plus my ThinkPad's are designed for XP so IBM will have to release a full set of working drivers for just about everything. Then there's the applications I use - will they work with Vista?

If I buy a new TP in the future I'll make sure it's Vista ready & supported but I will not 'upgrade' any XP box to Vista and I certainly won't let Microsoft dictate what I do.

Any current TP available and future models released this year are not made with Vista in mind....

Seriously, I'm happy with XP, and where XP has shortcomings (plentiful as they are) IBM has done and excellent job filling in the gaps (EasyEject hotkey, Access Connections, Presentation Director, software installer, Drive Utility, Fingerprint Reader). The Thinkpad software package is perhaps the only software package today where the software isn't junk, it's actually useful, unlike dell who installs 3 AOL's and an earthlink even when you say NO.
