T43, understanding layout of c:\drivers folder?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Thu Sep 08, 2005 10:43 pm

I want to burn a basic driver set CD for my 2668-75U. I'm looking to include sound, video, WLAN and Ethernet and for good measure, I'll throw on the setup program for Software Installer. I know I can download all this stuff from Lenovo's site but since it's already in my c:\drivers folder, I would like to just pull everything I need from there.
The problem is I don't understand what I'm seeing in the \drivers folder. There are a lot of subfolders which appear to be drivers or utilities, none of which have meaningful names. For example, after poking around, I can deduce that the folder called 1YU504WW appears to be the ThinkPad configuration utility.
Some folders do appear to have logical names but upon further examination, not all is as it seems. In my drivers\audio folder, I have a file called AEAUDIO.sys, but then other files in that folder, including the readme appear to be related to the Synaptics Touchpad Driver .

Is it just me, or is this much more of a mess than it needs to be? :?

If anyone can help me make sense of what I'm looking at it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

If you want to take the time, you can press your blue Access IBM button, choose download drivers, then when you click on the individual drivers on the IBM web page, another page will open with the name of the driver package install file. The file names will be like 1YU504WW that you named above.

hahaha... good luck finding your way through those driver folders. I gave up and simply moved them all off to an external HDD to free up the 1.5GB or whatever they take up on the computer drive. If software installer throws a fit I just point it to the external drive.

Those semi-redundant folders are the only weak point of the software installer system IMO. Too much wasted space, though at least they do give the option of rolling back drivers.
