Problem reading burned CDRs on T-Series CD-RW Drives

#1 Post by cooljw » Fri Sep 09, 2005 1:29 pm

I have a T42 and T43 that are both unable to read CDRs burned by a Dell D600. The same CDRs are being read correctly on other machines. These are high quality Imation CDRs burned by Nero (no overburning or anything funky).

This is what happens. I put the CDR in the Thinkpad, the drive spins and seeks, then Windows Explorer usually freezes for a while or crashes if I try to highlight the CD-RW drive. If I am able to get to the CD-RW drive in explorer w/o a crash, the contents of the drive show nothing.

I have the CD-RW drive in both Thinkpads. On my T43 the CD-RW drive FRU P/N: 39T2505 June 2005. I don't have the T42 drive handy but it is the same drive but older (and I think different P/N for some reason).

Anyone have any insight or experienced similar troubles reading some CDRs?

I would not be too suprised or disappointed if my new T41 would not read Imation disks...

I have run into compatability issues with Imation...
Specificlly, on my backup desktop...
a Dell d-4100/PIII@866mhz/ w/ LG drives...

I believe Imation 'names' their media 'premium'...
I'm not sure that the performance deserves it...
Media performance can be researched at; AnandTech.com....
Look in Reviews/Plextor716A....Check the screen shots/QCheck

I have had best luck with Tayo Yuden...
From; supermediastore.com...($.25/copy)

Best lu7k,
D

PS Any time you have a disk in the drive that is causing problems...
EJECT IT...(Even if you have to use the pin/emergency)...This has always returned the cmptr to normal for me.!
Also; My Nero oem 6.6 conflicts with DLA...(I removed 'IBM DLA')

More details...

I copied the CDR that my Thinkpad can't read using a desktop PC with CloneCD. Note that this CD is not copy protected. CloneCD reported that sectors 0-4 on the CDR were unreadable or something like that (can't remember the exact error message) - I believe it ended up writing zeros in these sectors as well.

The resulting copied CDR still does not work in my Thinkpads (T42 nor T43)! But it does work in other PCs, just like the CDR it was copied from.

I'm totally perplexed! I think I've got the problem narrowed down to Thinkpad software or hardware since it affects both my T-series and no other PC. Please help!

I would copy the files on your disk to the hard drive of your dell...
Then re-burn them to a tayo yuden disk...
(Or other media listed on the IBM's removable disk drive's compatability list...

Edit;

I could not find compatability list on IBM site...

I could not find a compatability list at Hitachi's site...
So I popped the combo drive out of my T41...
Top markings;
FRU #13N6769...ASM #13N6768...rev 101
Mftr'd Jun 05

Now the good part...
Bottom markings;
Hitachi-LG
CD-RW-DVD
Model #GCC-4242N...(This # is consistant with LG desinations)
No listing at LG's site...

I'm betting the combo drive is manufactured by LG for Hitachi...
That would tend to support suspected compatability issues with Imation...
