Screen flex?
Screen flex?
So I'm probably going to return my T42 for so many reasons, but I think a deciding factor is going to be this screen flex.
I'm not sure if I'm just especially abusive, but my screen flexes very readily when I push on the left side with medium pressure, twist the screen by the corners, or even tap hard on the back, and all this causes massive distortion. Is this normal? Or are my expectations too high?
Thanks in advance!

Well, right beside me there's a Dell 1150, and that screen does not flex or distort one bit no matter how hard I push, and there's only the tiniest bit of distortion when I twist it. Now that laptop is built like a tank. A plastic tank, but a tank nonetheless.
That's the only other laptop that I've had extensive experience with, so it's sort of my benchmark.

Re: Screen flex?
That doesn't sound normal. None of the things you described caused any distortion on my display. I wonder if the panel is improperly mounted in the display housing.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
That's what I've begun to think as well. Applying pressure on some parts of the screen can cause distortions across a large area of the screen, which just can't be right. That doesn't sound normal. Well, thanks for your input. Looks like I'll be sending this lappy back.
Hopefully I have better luck with the next one!

Well, the screen IS plastic, and I can see it bends a little when moved by holding only one top-corner. I myself am not suggesting moving any screen from the corners only, produces too much pressure to such plastic screens/lids.
When I tap on the back, the whole screen just moves back and forth, the LCD itself stays still.
I'm suspecting yours may just be a little loose.

Well, I carry it in a backpack with plenty of other junk, so I don't want that pressing against it and causing damage to the screen. I also have a habit of using laptops in weird positions, with the screen resting rather heavily on my legs or knees. It's really annoying when I do that and the screen distorts.
And mid-to-high end Dells really aren't really build as badly as everyone seems to think, in my experience. At least, in terms of build quality.
I'm pretty sure that I'm going to give Lenovo a call when I can (not until Wednesday, thanks to school) and arrange to ship this one back. Maybe I'll try calling tech support tomorrow, though, to see if any of the stuff that's been bothering me counts as enough of a problem to get it fixed.

Trip, I went to a Dell booth and experanced the most cheaply built laptops in a mall.
Then I went to the apple store, and laughed after that.
Sorry, even the 9200s and XPS Gen 2s can have screen distortion if you press on the back hard enough (That doesn't affect my 15 inch T43 tho)
Good luck on your return
