T43p Super fast...or normal...?
T43p Super fast...or normal...?
Having had my T43p for about 3 months now, I wanted to do another empirical test of the startup phase of the computer. Expereince shows that this time tends to become longer and longer without necessarily having to install more applications on the computer.
15 s. Windows black startup screen shows
53 s. Fingerprint logon shows
1.11 Windows desktop picture appears on the screen
3.40 Harddrive stops working indicating system loaded
My comment. Still waiting for the day when I can purchase a pc that stays fast well over the time you unpack it from the box. My old Toshiba 600 Mhz with 512 RAM was considered extremely slow at the end. Seems that my Thinkpad will soon be there...

I think it depends on what you install and what you have running in the background.goran5 wrote:Expereince shows that this time tends to become longer and longer without necessarily having to install more applications on the computer.
Really.
If you keep your machine the same way it was when you bought it, it will run at the same speed it ran when you bought it.

There are 10 types of people :
- some understand the binary
- other don't
There is also 10 types of windows users :
- the one that take care (not to having their drive fragmented, not to have to much apps loading at startup, not having spywares, connecting to internet throuh a router, making windows update, keep the different software they use up to date...). These users usually can use their windows during 2-3 years without too much problems
- the other one hope that the windows he paid 100$ for has to run out of the box until the end of the world. He will try to run latest technoloogies softwares without success because he has a fragmented disk, viruses, spywares. His pc will be slow to startup because with his windows xp, 256mb RAM and multiple software "quick start", his pc will begin to swap before he will launch its first application.
I know... Things are not like that. This binary vision is a bit extrem but shows the limits of the usual scope of users... At least, my clients are like that...

This test is far from being empirical... lol
But I already said that in your previous post...

First thing is obviously to remove all uneccessary drivers, gadgets, etc....
Assuming that has been done, Microsoft has a little free
utility that actually works quite well called "BootVis". I will leave it to you to RTFM, but basically what it does is
1 : Reboot you computer in order to establish a list of all the process that are started when you boot you machine.
2 : Determine the exact sequence and time required for the above.
3 : Rearrange the sequence in order that the the slow process are processed in the beggining and also that, where possible, several process are run at the same time.
You should at least give it a try, it's free and it will allow you to see which of the drivers, software etc are slowing down the boot sequence.
Outside of the usual "Spyware" infestations some of the other areas of research for slow boot times should be aimed towards "AntiVirus software and automatic updating", "Badly configured Networking params", "MS updates installing themselves".

Your systems seems to be very slow, here is my timing (I constantly do some tuning up/cleaning etc):goran5 wrote: 15 s. Windows black startup screen shows

1.11 Windows desktop picture appears on the screen
3.40 Harddrive stops working indicating system loaded
10s - WinXP black screen
40s - WinXP Login
49s - Desktop Pic
1.37 - HD stops all the activity
I have WinXP Pro SP2 and the follwoing progs are loaded on startup:
- chc, avg, kerio firewall, ms antispyware, some dictionary, topdesk and wireless lan mini pci adapter (all unnecessary IBM crap has been removed).
Try using defrag, bootvis, regorganizer utilities to improve your system performance.
If you are really desperate on squeezing the last drop out of your system, have a look at:

Do not forget to visit this one as well:

Good luck.
