T series fan behaviour unlike X series?

#1 Post by stgreek » Wed Jun 30, 2004 6:39 pm

I just got a lovely T40 but found something really frustrating about it. The fan never shuts off. Has everyone got the same issue or is it just my machine? (Is this the famous fan problem with the T4x?). The reason I am asking is that on my X31, whenever I lower the CPU frequency from 1400 to 600Mhz the fan will stop spinning shortly afterwards, with temps around 40s. However, on the T40, when I do the same (from 1.5 to 600), although the temp drops down to 35 degrees, the laptop fan will keep spinning. This is very annoying at night, since my laptop resides 1m from my bed. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Thanks
Stavros

Have you updated the BIOS and Embedded Controller Program?

Both have been updated to the latest versions, but still the issue remains. Any other ideas?

Stavros,

Out of curiostiy:

What model number/Build date has your Thinkpad?

Does your T40 also emit the 5 sec pulsating fan noise,
distlinctly heard in quiet rooms when the fan is running?

It is the 2374-PG2, made in Scotland, 2003. Yes, that is the noise I hear, and it simply never stops. Is this considered a mechanical fault (and therefore repairable) or am I stuck with it?

As an aside note, I am very dissapointed with the T40 quality. My X31 feels a far better quality notebook, and when I showed my 600X to the T40 the latter started crying...

2 new T41's...one noisy fan...service call accepted

#7 Post by rddesch » Sun Jul 04, 2004 1:38 pm

I've read with interest all of the fan noise posts in this forum and thought I'd update with my recent experience. I just received 2 new T41's for my daughters purchased via IBM employee sales. While the fans run quite continuously in both ThinkPads, one is suffering from a noise beyond the rushing air and exhibiting the pulsating every 5 seconds problem. The sound level from the second is quite acceptable. The serial numbers are consecutive so I expect they are identical. I placed a service call today citing the noise and pulsing. They're sending me a box so we'll see what happens.
