Nooobie with a few questions

#1 Post by rebop » Sat Sep 17, 2005 11:42 am

Hello folks,

Have not bought a laptop in years and time to upgrade my desktop so a "desktop replacement" seems a logical way for me to go right now. Seems like the Lenovo / IBM's are the best choice, but so many models I am getting confused and have a few questions:

1. What does the "P" on some of the models signify? Have not been able to find that answer.

2. I definitely want more than 1024 x 768 resolution. So what happens if I were to get a 1400 x 1050 and then hook up an external montior of 1280 x 1024? Will a T series with dock be able to maintain a desktop setting for the internal and external separately? How exactly does this work?

3. What are the main differences between the 42 and 43 series?

4. Kinda surprised at the speeds of the hardrives. I assume there is an option for a 7200 on most models, but if not, will I really notice the slower speed differences?

I think the X series is out for me for a number of reasons, so it will be a T or maybe Z. Seems like there are good deals on the site for T's now until Oct 3. Do these sales happen often or is this an unusually f\good time to buy? Are there better deals at independent resellers?

I really appreciate your feedback. Seems like a number of well informed folks here in my brief expoloration of this board.

Thanks!

Regarding question #1, it has been covered before - Here.

Regarding question #2, it is my understanding that you can set up an external monitor and the internal LCD at different resolutions. I believe you should not have a problem, but this is a feature I haven't used.

Regarding question #3, the T43 series has a newer Intel chipset than the T42. Basically it means higher performance. The T43 has (1) Cardbus PC card slot, and (1) PCI Express card slot. The T42 has (2) Cardbus PC card slots. You can download tabook.pdf for a listing of the features of the various models - Here.

Regarding question #4, the 7200 rpm drives are speedy, and you should notice a difference. They may be noisier and hotter however. I do not have one to give first-hand experience.

Consider Bill, the administrator of this forum for your purchase. He carries a number in stock, and you likely will not have to pay sales tax as you would with IBM/Lenovo.

Thanks for that reply!

And as a noobie, had no idea the moderator was a dealer. I shall look for links to see what I can see in that regard and read your links as well.

Appreciated.

Have not been able to download the tabook from any link I have found. Is it being redone perchance?

And I can not find any T4xP for sale at all at the Lenovo site. Are these discontinued?

I'm waiting til tomorrow to see all the details on the Z60T, but if higher res is not available, I think a T4xP is in my furutre. If they are available.

Item #1 in the FAQ worked fine for me just now.

Tried it again and I get port scans and it blocks any browser I try to use. Finally used an FTP program and got in. Odd behaviour.

Thanks for checking for me. I shall now go read :)

You may have to call Lenovo sales to order models you don't see listed on the site. It the current tabook shows they are still available, you can order them that way.
