Need advice on installing memory upgrade in T42

#1 Post by teepee » Sat Sep 17, 2005 4:43 pm

Hi

I just tried to install an aditional 1Gb memory stick in my T42 but with the extra stick the computer stalls. When I switched on the first time after installing the extra stick the machine powered up, the fan hit full throttle and stayed there, and the display was blank. I pressed the power button to power off, waited a few seconds and tried again. This time the same except I also got 4 beeps, followed by a pause, followed by 4 more beeps, at which time I switched off again, removed the extra stick (ie took everything back to original config) and it all works perfectly again.

Could I have failed to seat the stick properly? Or is this likely a different problem please?

Many thanks :-)

Mike

This may sound to simple but a vital part of troubleshooting, is it the right part# specifically for that model? Does it have physical damage, did you discharge yourself before touching it, usually touching a large metal object is sufficient. I have heard there is a setting in BIOS for installing extra ram, Try reseating it again, then I'd probably get my money back or return it for another.

On my t42 I just removed battery, opened that little cover on the bottom placed the module, replaced the battery and booted, the system picks it up.

hi mike, and thanks for the thoughts.

the part number is correct, there is no obvious physical damage, and i went through all of the usual safety precautions (done that quite a few times with other computers so no problems there). i also tried the whole thing again after posting here yesterday but got the same problem.

i'll give tp support a call tomorrow and see whether they have any sticky tape suggestions. otherwise, new memory time :-<.

all the best!

The beeps indicate hardware failures that can't be displayed because they occur so early in the POST that the display is not operational at the time of the failure. Go to the BEEP/NOBEEP diagnostics page on the IBM/Lenovo site to find out what the beeps mean. Hope it is bad memory rather than a MoBo problem.

looks like system board

hi, and many thanks for the pointer. v interesting page. would be nice to have the tp itself give these remarks following the next succesful boot.

anyway ....

looks like i've had 2 different beep scenarios, with the 1st and 3rd (ie no beep) requring either a DIMM reseat (tried this) or system board, and the 2nd (ie beep) meaning faulty secuirty chip (ie system board).

so, not the best news :-(. but at least i have a better idea of the likely problem.

will contact tp tomorrow and arrange for an engineer to visit.

cheers!

mike
