T43 freezing randomly in Windows XP Pro

#1 Post by Rahulio1989300e » Sat Sep 17, 2005 5:25 pm

Hello,

I have a 3 week old T43 ordered direct for the factory that I am having a small issue with.
Specs:
2.0Ghz Pent M
512Ram
80GB HD
64MB Raedon X300
14.1 1400x1050 TFT

Whenever I have it plugged in and after it has been running for at least 30minutes, it freezes.

I can still move the mouse around but I cannot click on anything. The hardrive light has little or no activity too.

This problem started exactly 3 days ago, and is on and off.

The only way I can get out of it is holding down the power button until it is forced to turn off. Then after 10 seconds I reboot and all is normal again...

I had a similar problem with an old i1400 I fixed... (was my brother's old college laptop, one day it just stopped powering on and would not take a charge. I fixed it with a new power adapter :-) It would freeze in WinXP Pro, but I fixed that by downgrading to Win98SE)

I really am wondering if my laptop is overheating, It sits on a nice clean and flat wood desk, all the rubber feet and perfectly fine on the laptop. So I do not know what to do... should I get a laptop cooling mat?

On a side note, I bought this laptop for college use.
I had a choice between an $800 Dell 600M or a$1500 T43, and I am glad I bought the IBM.

Many people have Dells here at Georgia Tech, probably because of the great deals they give out.. I picked up a Dell 600M, just like the one I was going to get... The weight was about the same, but the creaks and feeling that the whole Dell was bending and warping was really disappointing!

Thanks for any help you can give me

GO IBM!n :P

Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Look for any error messages at the times you experienced the freezing. Hopefully you will find a clue there.

*could* be some bad RAM, or a bard hard drive. Definately look for error messages. Running some diagnostics on the RAM and HD would be a good idea too. I'd personally side a bit towards HD.

Are you using CHC? I had the same problem due to voltage too low at the lowest multiplier.
