choice of memory when upgrading T43p

#1 Post by triffo » Mon Sep 19, 2005 1:30 pm

I have a 2669 model T43p, which shipped with 1 GB RAM. I need to upgrade to 2 GB (I process large datasets), and the upgrade component from Lenovo is
(part#) 73P3844 1GB PC2-4200 CL4 NP DDR2 SDRAM SODIMM
.

The academic discount price through Lenovo is $216.75.

My question is, does it matter if I get the IBM/Lenovo part, or if I buy an identically spec-ed stick from another manufacturer? The equivalent part can be found for half the price Lenovo is requesting I pay.

My instinct is that it shouldn't matter, but I would prefer not to find out I have memory / bandwidth issues (do you have to have "matched" parts down to the actual manufacturer for dual channel?) after the fact.

Does anyone have opinions on this? I scanned the site but my searches didn't pull up information specific to this topic.

I also wanted 2gb. So i bought 1gb corsair for my father's lappy (he has the same as mine). And i took his stick to put in my t43p (so both sticks are from the same manufacturer). I prefered having both same since they work in dual channel mode. BTW : the corsair 1gb stick in my father's t43p work well.

Summary :
- Seems that there is no problem in using other branded memory sticks
- I don't know how two skicks from different manufacturer will work well in dual channel mode.

hmm,

buying the upgrade part from IBM to ensure "identical" parts for dual-channel mode isn't a desirable option - could almost buy two new 1GB sticks for that price...anyone else out there have experience with / knowledge about this?

I've been adament about buying IBM brand memory due to the Sonoma requirement for dual channel operation, but I've found that IBM uses several different suppliers for its memory. I've received Micron, Infineon, Hynix, etc. even though they are all spec'd the same.

so, I would go to newegg and buy a good name brand memory (OCZ, Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair) and give it a try. I noticed OCZ is only $95 after rebate for 1 gig.

You don't like samsung? Their RAM has the best quality on the world.
As I know they own 80% of the ram market in last year. 8)
