Are new T43 14" screens brighter than T42 14"

#1 Post by ssl » Thu Sep 22, 2005 1:09 am

I have a T42 1400x1050 and a T43p flexview, I'm about to get a T43 14.1 inch and am wondering if anyone knows if the screen has improved even a little.
thanks

-T61 (On it last legs)
-Using a desktop now b/c i can't find a laptop to drive my 2560x1600 monitor.

Depends on which screen your T42 has. Most T42s have screens made by Samsung or IDTech. Some people have reported getting the Hydis screen with some of the current 14" T42 with sxga+.

The 14" T43 with sxga+ uses the Hydis screen and they are a tad brighter and has slightly better viewing angles than the Samsung or IDTech screens, but still not as good as the flexview ones.

that is incorrect. The 14.1" SXGA+ T43's ship with both Hydis AND Samsung panels - I know because I've gotten both on different T43's. The Hydis panel is slightly brighter and sharper than the Samsung panel, but both are quite good.

some 14.1" SXGA+ T42's also ship with Hydis panels, but most ship with Samsung (I just received a 14" T42 2373H6U which came with a Hydis panel).

the 15" T43 SXGA+ models ship with either ID Tech or Samsung panels, while 15" T43p UXGA panels are all made by ID Tech. most users report that the ID Tech panels are brighter than the Samsung panels on the 15" SXGA+ models.

you can do a parts lookup here to see which LCD panel your systems have: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... sLookup.vm

I checked out this page, and only found this information regarding my screen:

92P6736 92P6737 14.1 LCD FLAT PANEL DISPLAY FRU YES

How do I determine what kind of screen is included in my t43?

Go to ibm.com and paste the second number into the search box. click on the link in the search results that corresponds to your system, then use the Find feature on your browser to locate that part number on the page.

Look like 92P6737 is a Hydis panel, which most prefer over the Samsung panel.

are you sure about that? according to this page, all 15" SXGA+ panels are made by ID Tech:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55304

on the T43's, it looks like the 15" SXGA+ panels are made by both ID Tech and LG:

that's interesting. I have a T43 on order that has the exact same panel made by LG - 92P6761 (I looked up the serial no.)

When did you purchase your T42 2379DXU? perhaps the ID Tech panels are on short supply so Lenovo is using LG panels on the T42's as well.

I've seen many ID Tech 15" SXGA+ panels on T42's and T43's and they are superb, so I am very interested in seeing how the LG panel compares. I'll let you know what I find (UPS is supposed to deliver today according to the tracking #).

If your screen has been replaced by IBM... is there anyway to tell what they replaced it with (short from taking the thing apart)? Will to auto-detect work? (I'm thinking no, because it picks up only the S/N i think).

My original LCD was ID TECH; the new one I don't know. I like the second one better (seems sharper). never heard of ID TECH either. 15" T42p.

that's very strange - both LCD's on your T42p should have been identical since ID Tech is the only manufacturer who makes 15" FlexView UXGA panels.

UPS didn't deliver saturday so I'm expecting them by 10:30am monday (in about 7 hours). I'll let you all know how the LG panel compares to the ID Tech panel.

Well, my first screen began getting "dark spots" as time went on, which is probably why I liked the second one better :) (They claimed it was pressure).

Samsung 14.1" SXGA+ v. Hydis 14.1" SXGA+

#17 Post by hoya » Tue Sep 27, 2005 11:55 am

here are some pictures comparing the Hydis to the Samsung. I would say the Hydis has slightly better contrast (better blacks), but overall they are very similar:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11221256@N00/

here is a comparison of the two 15" FlexView panels (LG and ID Tech):

Hmm... you compared the 15" flexview screen with two 14"; isn't that a bad comparison? Would you happen to have a 15" flexview manufactured by another company for comparison?

It seems to me that the LG screen looks less washed out and more vivid. I wonder if this is due to the screen itself or the video card.

Those are bad pictures since they are prefering the display in the middle. Better would be one single photographical image of each display with a dark image part for contrast judgement and with blue and red parts, like a the sea and fire. Blue and red, they are the achilles' heel of every panel.

gattler - look at the very last four pictures, in which I placed the LG panel on the left rather than in the middle.

last picture here:

and three pictures here:

Thank you! Looks like the LG is the best. Do you know if all new T43 SXGA are coming with the LG? If its pure luck, i'd better go for the 14" thanks to its light weight. It seems to be same level with the ID Tech UXGA.

the 14.1" SXGA+ panels are non-flexview and are made by either Samsung or Hydis. the 15" SXGA+ panels are made by either ID Tech or LG, while the 15" UXGA panels (available only on the p models), are made only by ID Tech.

here is a nice T43 for sale on eBay with an LG panel:

if you do a parts lookup using that serial number you'll see that it's an LG panel and an NMB keyboard. search on 'parts lookup' in these forums and you'll see the link where you can input the machine type and serial number on ibm's site.

I know the link, but there are 3 text-fields, i put number into rightest one (quick path) and then another page comes up with a short info on the thinkpad, i click on the link below that says "part information". then a longer list is coming up and i click on "Service parts list index - ThinkPad General 2005-10-06". Then it shows both panels id tech LG, and it shows for 14" models also all possible panels..

Just fill in the left two boxes for Type and Serial number. Leave the Quick path box empty.

BTW you can get the same info by pressing the blue Access IBM button and choosing: Get Help & Support > Find support information > Warranty and parts information.
