Burn Process keeps Failing! Why!?
Im using Nero. Every burn process fails. I uninstalled Nero, then reinstalled. I can burn CD's, but NOT DVD's which is what I need to burn. This has been happening for more than a couple weeks now, and I plenty of DVD's that are new... tried most of them now.
Any other burning software I can try that you may suggest on the WinXP platform?
If it's not Nero, please don't tell me something wrong with the drive itself. What would it be if it is the drive.. anything I can fix?
Thanks

Make sure your hard drive is defragged...
disable all networks & av...
disable screensaver...
reduce write speed if nesessary...
(Anything running in the background such as updaters can reek havoc on your burns...
GomJabbar's advice is crucial...compatable media is a must...
I use Tayo Yuden media (supermediastore.com)...@$.25/copy)
Nero 6.6 oem (bestbargainpc.com)-$4)
NOTE; DLA conflicts w/Nero...Have you removed DLA?
What drive are you using...?...(IBM lists both machines in your sig. w/combo drives...that is, they will not burn dvds)

Lots can be to blame.
1. Is your drive DMA enabled? It should be
2. Media compatibility...+ or - , but also some burners are picky and don't like some company's media....read up on what works with your burner at www.cdfreaks.com (go to their forum).
3. DLA interferes a great deal with DVD burning...uninstall it.
4. Latest driver for your burner (sorry, not sure which one you have or else I would direct you to it... but usually www.rpc1.com will have it.
5. Don't really have a DVD burner and think you do (I've seen this more than I'd like to admit).
6. Dirty discs
7. Interfering software other than DLA (several different burning software using different burning layers such as ASPI (WinASPI) layer, Nero's own layer, ElbyCDIO, and several others.
8. a plethera of other possibilities.

thanks folks,
It's not the media. Ive tried more than 3 manufacturers and multiple sorts of DVD's. Drive is DVD+-RW. I forget what tabook has listed, says I think "multi-recorder".
Folks, please note, I could burn DVD's until 2-3 weeks ago. Been burning them on this system for the past summer. I went through about 8 of a 25 set, then I tried other manufacturers as my main one wasn't burning.
Not sure what DLA is, I googled it and said it should be listed in the Add/Remove programs list.. - it's not there so that ends that. I will try to adjust the Nero speed settings, reduce processes, screensaver etc.. Ill look into the driver too.
Thanks and I welcome more suggestions as I try the suggestions in the preceding paragraph.

This happened to me as well. I was unable to burn CDs all of a sudden (not DVDs). I had IBM send me a new CD burner, which didn't work (the replacement was a remanufactured). I sent it into EZServ, who replaced the CD drive (brand new drive I think), and it worked the first time. I'm going to try burning another CD today.

DLA is an acronym for 'Drive Letter Access'. It enables copying files to a RW disk just as you would if you were copying them to a floppy or another hard drive. DLA formats the RW disk in UDF format.nirvana0001 wrote:what is IBM DLA program for? Should I uninstall it? Why it takes affect to DVD burning?MadeInJapan wrote: 3. DLA is an operating system extension, and can cause problems with some CD or DVD burning software. I recently installed Nero on a desktop computer, and it had it's own version of DLA called INCD. I had to uninstall INCD to allow the desktop computer to boot into Safe Mode. Strange.

Have you tried completely uninstalling the DVD burner in Device manager and then removing it, shutting down and rebooting without it once before reinstalling it? Sometimes these things are finnicky...don't know why but some hardware works again when you do such things as I mention.

This reminds me of a time I couldn't get DMA to work with my CD-RW/DVD drive. After searching on the net I found the solution. I had to go into Device Manager and uninstall the CD-RW/DVD drive and uninstall the IDE/ATAPI controllers. When I rebooted, Windows found the devices and installed the necessary drivers. Now I was able to get DMA to work with my drive again.MadeInJapan wrote:Have you tried completely uninstalling the DVD burner in Device manager and then removing it, shutting down and rebooting without it once before reinstalling it? So in short, if MadeInJapan's suggestion doesn't work, try doing what I did above.
Another thing to try if possible. Put your drive in another ThinkPad and see if it works. You may have a hardware problem. CD's and DVD's require different laser settings. I think they may even use separate lasers - even in the same drive (not certain though).

I'm a little surprised that no one has suggested cleaning the dust off of the laser mechanism yet. I had no problems burning CDs for over 18 months and then started having problems. I tried a different brand of CDs but that still gave me CDs that passed "verify" with RecordNow but didn't work in other drives and barely worked in mine. Since my screen and keyboard need cleaned now and then, it seemed wise to look inside the drawer with a magnifying glass to see how dusty the laser lens was. It was dusty .... now it's clean and the problems are gone.
