system board error 0192 on tp40p

#1 Post by crobar » Sat Sep 24, 2005 11:50 am

I have replaced my tp40 system board to a tp40p (the seller said it was).
Now i have a 0192 error:System Security-IBM Embedded Security hardware tamper detected.
I have cleared the security chip no effect.
The strange thing is when i change anything in the bios and save the changes and starting it up again and look in the bios the things i change are back before the change....(bad cmos????????????)
the seller didn't had any type number of the TP were the systemboard was took from.
i put my tp40 hardware on the tp40p MB.

tp40p Bios version: 2.14 (1RET87WW)
Embedded Controller Version:2.04
Bios Date 2004-01-26

CPU speed 1.3 ghz
memory 512mb

Ibm say's that it is a system board problem but i had it second handed so the won't help me.(no hard feelings)

maybe there is anybody here who can help me or have some suggetions that i can try.

sigh...why do people do this stuff?

here's another guy in a similar situation, perhaps some information posted (or to be posted) could be of use to you (not sure, but couldn't hurt to look):

THNX for your reaction.

i don't have a password problem, my Eeprom is clean. Why i did this is because i wont spent 600 dollar for a new systemboard before trying.

make sure you have set the time, date, system serial number, motherboard serial, cpu serial number, clear security chip or disable it and see if it helps.

To the best of my knowledge, you need the Hardware Maintenance Diskette and a floppy drive to set serial numbers. IBM/Lenovo will not sell you one. You can find older versions on the web for download.

is the serials all written on the hardware or is it in the bios displayed?
and will it boot on floppy?because it won't boot from cd-rom?
and what do you think about that the saving in the bios is not saved?

Sounds like it's gone into some sort of self protect mode, and you'll likely have a hard time getting it to do anything for you until you convince it that you are the rightful owner.

If the machine thinks the security sub-system has been tampered with (as evidenced by the 0192 error) then it's not surprising that it write locked the BIOS. You can change what's loaded in RAM, but when you exit it tries to write it to CMOS, and the security system says "I don't think so."

Based on the fact that the seller could not tell you where the board came from, it's probably stolen. He screwed around with it trying to get it to work, then gave up and looked for a sucker to sell it to. That's where you came in.

Was this an eBay item? If so, which one?

No offense meant, really, but sometimes you just have to call 'em like you see 'em (that is a colloquial American expression derived from baseball - I hope it translates correctly).

Are you saying that you can control some things in BIOS (serial port, for example) but not others? If that's the case then I'm guessing (yes, guessing - I'm no expert on the TPM specs) there must be some functions that are considered safe (like the serial port) and others that are locked down once the tamper code is set (like passwords, etc.).

The TPM specs are available on the web at https://www.trustedcomputinggroup.org/groups/tpm/ - if you read them you might get a better understanding of what the board is doing, and possibly a hint of how to recover it.
