Oh no, Strange cosmetic difference? much ado about nothing!

#1 Post by vliou » Sat Sep 24, 2005 5:47 pm

Hello,

I just noticed a problem with my T42...a cosmetic problem that is. Here's how I'm going to describe it...

I'm typing on my T42, and on the hinge between the main chassis and the lcd panel on the left side...i see steel inside the crease...It's like...beside the big steel thing that everybody has, in that little teeny hole beside it, i see exposed steel...i think there should have been a plastic cap over that and it inevitablly fell off...anybody have any idea?

Thanks.

If you are talking about the lid or display bezel, there is a 1/4" round hole about 3/8" from the outside edge, and about 1/2" from the bottom. There should be a black stick-on over the screw. There is another one about 1/2" to the left of the status indicators (wireless, cap lock, num lock, HD, power on, battery, sleep) on the bottom center of the display bezel.

You can find the part number for the LCD misc. parts in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Hello,

Sorry, I was unclear. I've given a lot of thought as to how to explain this, and i think the best way is this...

On the left hand side on the gap between the lid and the main chassis, left of the silver looking hinge...the gap is about 1/4 inch. It's a "U" shape thing in the gap right? It's supposed to be black...but mine is silver...suggesting that there was a lid beforehand to cover the steel...Anybody know a part number?

On my T42, this piece is silver too. I believe this is normal.

Part numbers are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Oh I see. I just found it weird that my left side was steel, and my right side was black...

Btw, the Z60M just came out in Canada (it just came out on the site)!

mine are also silver...well..steel that is. perhaps you're looking at part of the hinge...if you look at the hinges for the lcd screen, you can see that they aren't just straight hinges, they have an anchor base that's anchored to the unit itself...is that what you're looking at?

Why must people just search and search for something wrong with their laptop. Just relax and enjoy it or you are going to drive yourself CRAZY!

What you're looking at is the rest of the hinge, I think.

I agree with Greg, though. Remember, in the asylum they will only let you use crayons, not keyboards. :-) If you look around, there are some other interesting gaps, inconsistencies, things that give under pressure, and things that move (!!!) if you touch them. So don't look. :-)

I've done a complete tear-down of my T42 before, and the OP is right. There is a cylindrical, black plastic sleeve that covers the metal hinge, and it does have enough play to slide around a bit and expose the metal underneath.

Not a big deal, but it was surprising to see how much goo/grease is packed onto the area!

security cable anchor

 On my T42 it just looks like what others have stated: the base of the hinge. The base extends all the way to the edge on the left side--I assume so that it can act as an anchor for the security-cable notch.
