T40 Upgrade with New hitachi 7K100 - 80GB hard drive

#1 Post by sapsteve » Sat Sep 24, 2005 7:41 pm

Hello,

Greetings. I just joined the forums. I appreciate all your efforts in the forum.

I recently happen to get my hands on a brand new hard drive from Hitachi 7K100 HTS721080G9AT00 80 7200 ATA part number 0A25023.

Unknowingly I ghosted the new drive with the content from existing drive and was expecting to work magically, but it is IBM so it did not work. When I inserted the new drive with ghost image of my old hard drive, when booted, nothing happens. I see a cursor blinking at the top left corner.

I need your expert help. What I need to do in simple steps to get this new hard drive work with T40?

Sounds like something is FUBAR with the MBR. Your boot loader seems missing/corrupt/out of place or something like that.

If it were me, I'd do a clean install on the drive. But perhaps someone more daring would have a better solution.

I've ghosted drives and they work fine. Give it another shot, or if you have recovery CD's make the image that way, if you don't, you should be able to burn a set from your factory IBM drive, > create restore media.

There is a chance that drive is not compatible, someone else may have that information.

How can I make the drive compatible? Do I need to flash the drive with a firmware from IBM?

I am "not sure" it is not compatible, it may very well be. There are many members here who will know. If you need to find out quick, maybe google, or search the IBM web site or the vendor site for your hard drive.

When you booted up with the drive in place did it say "operating system not found" ?

Could this possibly be related to your problem?

I recently installed a Hitachi 5K100 100GB HDD and it works fine in my T41 (latest BIOS; no warning messages). No need to flash anything. I though fresh installed everything and did not ghost.
