DVD/CDRW vs. DVD-R

What kind of advantage does the DVD-R(the mult drive from IBM T42s) have compared to regular DVD/CDRW? such as more data storage...

By th way, how much can you store in one DVDR disc?

Can I burn a DVD moive? or is that illegal?

It's quite difficult (and, the movie companies would have you believe, illegal) to copy a commercial DVD movie becasue of the CSS encryption. There are a couple of programs available to enable you to do this but it can get complicated. You can usually copy home movies from videocassette to a DVD using the supplied software. Until the computer business gets it's act together regarding a standard (DVD+ vs DVD-) it's a bit of a crapshoot what we will be using in 10 years!

Usually a DVD/CDRW reads DVDs and READS/WRITES CDs. The DVD recorder reads and writes to both. If you have a lot of data to backup then the DVD-R might be for you.

You can store 4.7Gb of data on a DVD writeable disc, this compared to 700Mb or so with your run-of-the-mill 80 minute CD-R. Technically it is legal to make a backup copy of a DVD movie but illegal to compromise the copy protection (go figure ). Which is basically saying "You can possess a backup copy legally, but you can't make one legally." Actually, the real difficulty is that most DVD movies are dual-layer so you would need to get 8Gb onto a 4.7Gb disc, so a real backup is not possible.
