T40 with IBM L180p

I have an 18" IBM LCD Monitor, and was wondering about the different ways to watch tv and movies on my LCD.

Would the picture compare to a dedicated LCD?

Also i know that i could connect a newer dvd player to the dvi input, but TV is really the most important, and I would like to bypass my laptop.
