T42/T43 Samsung, LG, and Hydis SXGA+ comparison (Pictures)

#1 Post by hoya » Mon Sep 26, 2005 7:18 pm

I took some pictures comparing a 15" FlexView (center) to both Hydis and Samsung 14" SXGA+ panels:

I would say the Hydis and Samsung 14" SXGA+ panels are nearly identical, though the Hydis is slightly brighter and has some better contrast (blacks are slightly blacker if you look closely)

here are some more comparing two 15" FlexViews (LG & ID Tech) with a Hydis non-flexview SXGA+ panel:

Hey, nice job with the direct comparison! I'm interested in seeing the difference between the two flexview manufacturers. Got the URL for the FRU-lookup page on-hand? :P

Well, the LG certainly appears to be brighter.
However, I can't tell about the color accuracy from the pictures.
For example, the red looks more orange, the greens look a little more lime green, etc.

I realize that these are just pictures of displays, so it is harder to tell then for you in person.

that's absolutely true. after looking at all of those pictures myself, I thought for sure that I would want the LG 15", but after using the notebooks in person, I find the ID Tech 15" to be much easier on my eyes. a picture might be worth a thousand words, but it certainly doesn't tell the whole story.

One thing I notice is that the LG is dead center - directly facing the camera, where the IDT and 14" are not. While IPS is certainly wide-angle, I do notice a slight color/brightness shift if I look at my screen from a slight angle. I wonder if this is reflected or exacerbated in the camera shots?

Would you mind taking one shot with the two 15"s switched around?

Edit: Actually, funny thing. I happen to have a picture of two 15" SXGA+ and UXGA screens that is nearly the same as what you put up. SXGA+ is marginally brighter than UXGA (as it should be) but definitely not the big difference as in your pics:

Thakns Hoya,

Yeah that LG screen looks VERY nice, but it's good to know you actually prefer the IDT. I actually have no idea who makes my screen (never checked the vendor when I dismantled the LCD)...but I have no dead pixels on my UXGA so I'm not gonna complain about it :)

Kenn - your screen is made by ID Tech since they are the only vendor supplying 15" FlexView UXGA panels to Lenovo/IBM.

if you'd like to do a parts lookup, here is the page:

I'm bringing this topic alive because I'd like to ask, which SXGA+ 14.1" panel has the best contrast/quality/brightness ration among the manufacturers.

My T42p has the FRU 11P8346, which is the ID Tech SXGA+ TFT display panel. I'm looking to replace the panel, but I'm not sure which FRU to get, the FRU 11P8348 is for my model also but made from Samsung, according to the HMM.

What are your thoughts about 14.1" TSXGA+ T4x panels and could I get one from the Marketplace here and shipped to Mexico
