When I close the lid on my T43, the computer turns to standby. Unfortunately, sometimes the screen is completely blank when I open the screen, and i cannot access my previous screen, which requires me to power-off and restart. I have lost some of my work because of this. Is there a setting that I need to implement to prevent this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I think , it's just take long time to return from STBY. maybe if you will wait like me ....MINUTES
then you will get finally your desktop as you left it. I really had it with this STBY. many times after i'm waiting it's just reboots.
and yeah if i close the lead just for short time, then it's fine ..what the heck with that ? it's a computer that goes to deep sleep if you leave it alone for a wile.

I have a T42 and I use standby all the time with no problem. Within about 5 seconds after pressing the Fn key, I get the log-in screen. After I type in my password, I have the desktop in about another 5 seconds.
First rule of thumb. Do not unplug or plug in any hardware while the computer is on standby.
Some things you might look into: T43 Driver Matrix.
1. Make sure your BIOS is up-to-date.
2. Make sure your Embedded Controller is up-to-date.
3. Verify that you have the latest version of ACPI Power Management.
4. Verify that you have the latest version of SATA Power Management.
5. Verify that you have the latest version of Intel Chipset drivers.
6. Try turning off wireless and bluetooth radios before going into standby.
7. Make sure you don't have any scheduled tasks that start as soon as you come out of standby. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks to see what is scheduled. You can also check here to see if a scheduled task started when you came out of standby and experienced a delay.
8. Look at the event logs. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Check for entries listed at the time you came out of standby and experienced delays.
9. See if having Wireless Zero Configuration service set to Automatic and Started makes any difference. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Look near the bottom of the list for the WZC service. Double-click on it to make changes.

I remember that I had same issue; it would finally come on, but after 2-3 minutes or so.
However, i noticed that this never happened when I entered standby by pressing Fn+F4 instead of closing the lid. So, I set the lid close action to "do nothing" and started using the key combination to enter standby - since then the thing never happened again.

It may sound strange and I do not know the reason for this type of behaviour and why it would be different for the key action instead of lid close.
I suggest you try it and write what you find out
