Ultrabay 2000 HD adapter?

#1 Post by littleM » Thu Sep 29, 2005 12:14 am

I am new here. Hope you guys can help me.

I am not sure if this is what I need.

I just want to put a second HD in my T20 and T30. They have the thick kind of ultrabays. Is an ultrabay 2000 HD adapter what I need? I have a new 80GB HD.

Also, since I have a T40 too, how can I use its Slim CDRW drive? Is there an adapter for that? or do I have to get a separate CDRW drive for my T20 and T30?

Forgive my stupid questions. I cannot understand the IBM website about these stuffs.

TIA! :o

Yes, you need the ultrabay 2000 HD adapter to add a 2nd HD to your T20 and T30.
Yes, there is a ultrabay slim to ultrabay 2000 adapter to use your T40 CDRW drive in an ultrabay 2000:

Thank you for your quick reply!

Since I do have a slim 2nd HD adapter for my T40, does it mean all I need is a ultrabay slim to ultrabay 2000 adapter? Will that meet both of my needs - 1)add 2nd HD to T20 and T30, and 2)use T40's slim CDRW drive on T20 or T30? :?:

The link only mentions using it with optical drives, but I'm pretty confident that it'll work fine for your needs. Best of luck!

The Slim Drive adapter for UltraBay 2000 does NOT work with the UltraBay Slim Second Hard Disk adapter (it says so in the manual). It seems to work only with the Slim optical drives (I can't think of anything else that's available). You'll need the specific UltraBay 2000 Second Hard Disk adapter, unfortunately.

It looks like there may be two question here:

1. If you want to use a Slim CDRW drive in your Ultrabay 2000, the above link should work (Ultrabay Slim to 2000 adapter)

2. If you want to be able to move the HARD DRIVE between Ultrabay 2000 and Ultrabay Slim, you can get both hard drive adapters and physically remove the drive from one adapter and install it in the other. I do this all the time, it just takes seconds.

Another option for the hard drive is to use it as a USB drive. The housings are pretty cheap these days. Drive performance will suffer, however.

One more note: My T42p has an internal ultrabay slim, plus an ultrabay 2000 in the Dock II, so I can use both at the same time.

So this means that I will need to get 1)ultrabay 2000 2nd HD adapter and 2)Slim Drive Adapter for Ultrabay 2000. Am I reading this correct?

Thank you so much, Edward, otherwise I would just buy one slim drive to 2000 adapter.

Unfortunately, yes. I've got the slim-drive-to-2000 adapter, which I use to take the DVD that came with my T42 and use it in the Dock II Ultrabay 2000 slot.

The Slim 2nd HDD adapter does not even fit physically into the slim-drive-to-2000 adapter. (It has a smooth surface on the edge where the slim DVD drive has a little opening, which a bit of plastic on the slim-to-2000 adapter fits into.)

You'll need BOTH adapters that you mentioned in your message in order to use a slim DVD (or other optical drive) in the Ultrabay 2000 slot AND to use a second hard disk in the Ultrabay 2000 slot.

I've been using the HDD adapter in the ultra slim bay of my T42p (with a 40G 5400rpm Fujitsu hdd). I've found the speed to be subjectively slow and was wondering if anyone knows if the transfer speeds are the same when used in the bay?

thanks,
john

Testing on a T42p with two 7K60 hard drives using HDTach.

2nd hard drive mounted in Ultrabay slim, drives performed identically.
2nd hard drive mounted in Dock II's ultrabay, drives performed identically

See this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... =benchmark

But has anyone tested the difference between the performance of the same HDD installed as the primary, internal drive, and installed in a bay?

Thanks RonS - that's what I was looking for. Since you are knowledgable regarding hdd performance, have you had a chance to bench any of the new Hitachi 7K100 or Seagate 7200.1 drives? I'm wondering if they offer a big boost in speed over the 7K60 (I would assume so considering the higher areal density).

I haven't found the 7K100 for sale yet. Does anyone know where I can get one?

ZipZoomFly had the 100gb and 60gb a few days ago, but I just checked and they now only have the 60gb.

I've seen a few 100gb 7k100 PATA's go for $400 on eBay which is absurd considering I've found several for around $200 and some online retailers. only problem is that none are currently in stock.
