Which brand of memory is T43 using?

#1 Post by Procter » Thu Sep 29, 2005 7:09 pm

My machine has 512MB pc4200, but I don't know the brand. Since I'm considering upgrade my memory for dual channel, it's better to use the same brand.

BTW I found monarchcomputer are selling 2G corsair PC4200 for 161 w/ free shipping

IBM historically uses several brands interchangably, so it will vary... why not just pop it open and look?

You do not need to use the same brands for dual channel. You can even mix memory sizes (i.e. 512MB + 256MB). Speeds are the same. There isn't much of a performance benefit anyway. Check out my Sonoma article where I used a T43 & R52 to perform dual channel tests:

Another thing to note is most brands don't use the same chips (what actually matters on the stick). Unless of course they make their own (Crucial aka Micron for example).

I also forgot: IBM generally uses Samsung RAM.

Ram is Ram in laptop computers

You cannot run dual channel memory with different sized memory modules. You need parity in memory, 512mb vs. 512mb. Brands of laptop memory are inconsequential. The latency and speed will be the slowest of the two memory modules. If the latency is 4-4-4 and 533 for speed that's what you will get. If one is slower than the other, that's your speed.

I have 1024mb of memory 1gb and 256mb. Because of the difference in memory size, I'm not running dual channel. I bought my T43 with 256mb standard and odered 1gb of DDR2 4-4-4 533mhz ram from newegg.com for $95 with shipping. IBM would probably charge at least $300 for a 1gb stick. Incidentally, the ram was Transcend. That's about as generic as a brand can get. Desktop memory quality in the high end can vary. OCZ, Mushkin and Corsair all have very good reputation in desktop memory. I attached a link below of 1GB sticks available on newegg.com

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... t=Property

I will be adding another 1GB stick when the price drops to $50. Then i will be operating in dual channel.

I am pretty sure that the T43 doesn't support dual channel, so it doesn't matter anyway.

T43s do support dual channel. fbrdphreak did an article on it. It even states that T43s are dual channel in the tabook.

Another article (linked to the last page w/ benchmarks) about dual channel memory:

I know this is a little off topic but fbrdphreak, is Raleigh, NC where those Raleigh bikes are made? Just asking because I have a Raleigh bike and that name just stood out.

t42 ram

#15 Post by Thinkpad315 » Tue Oct 11, 2005 3:18 am

I recently purchased a T42 w/256 RAM. Can I just placed a 512 or 1G memory into the 2nd slot or do I have to match the 256 w/a 256 and 512 w/a 512 ...etc? How can I tell what brand is my original 256 RAM and how can I tell the latency on my original 256MB? Does the original 256 comes in DDR? How can I find out if my notebook RAM is running in series or parallel..? Thank you for your help with my questions?

RAM doesn't run in series/parallel as far as you're concerned ;) All you need to know is the type of RAM. All T42's support DDR333 (PC-2700) SO-DIMM. You do not have to match capacities or anything, just put in what you want!

Here are all the prices for 512MB & 1GB DDR333 SODIMM sticks; just about anything will work in your T42, so don't worry about name brands!
