T42 2373-3VU price drop...IBM direct

#1 Post by nowstime » Thu Jul 01, 2004 9:29 pm

I had a talk with the IBM Rep. and told me that 2373-3VU is $300 less expensive than June...

If you call IBM or request a quote for a education model through your school...you don't pay tax...and free ground shipping...

the price quote I got...

2373-3VU $2387...
2378-FVU $1760 + 256MB ($77) + 2 year warranty ($99)

FVU is not a educational model but can be purchased through IBM's educational program...

No sales tax, free ground shipping...But if you go to your campus store and get it...then you have to pay tax...

Hope it helps...

sounds to me like some have been smoking those funny little cigarettes again..

the 23733VU still shows a $3099 price on the ibm web site..
http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_23733VU
as of this moment..

IBM MUST (read MUST) add sales tax to all orders where appropriate..
i have not heard that states now exempt students, or purchasers or education models, from state mandated sales tax..
nor, i imagine, do schools exempt from sales tax UNLESS they sell across state lines to a state where they have no "presence"..

it is simply "The Law"..

so if there IS a link to a student only section of the IBM web site please let me know, as the only links i can find are crashing with an error..

I don't know if it's true for all state contracts, but with my state you can be an alum and still get the discount. That's a lot of people, and they could be living in any state. I haven't ordered my T42 yet, but I emailed and asked what proof was required so at least I can get my stuff ready just in case. I haven't heard any reply yet, but from what I've heard from other people online, they never ask for proof. HP's online educational store has you register, put your student ID, and says that there's a chance they'll audit some purchases and they'll charge the difference you if you lied.

Sooner or later, IBM WILL audit the order. Not only would they charge the card with the difference, but this kind of misrepresentation would be criminal fraud! I'm not being moralistic, it's just not worth it to get in this king of trouble with all the legitimate discounts we all have access to.

Just curious, do you know this has happened, or are you just saying it might?

Merely being an alum is not usually adequate to obtain the discount, but yes a lot of Univs. have contracts which allow members of the Alumnae association to purchase through the educational program.

I'm an adjunct professor at two different univs. and I have access to the discount programs at these and other schools.

Some states, Pennsylvania being one, have semi-annual, week-long, tax holidays for computer purchases. These events used to generate a lot of press and publicity, but I don't hear much about them much anymore.

The original idea was that students had seven days, twice a year, (in Jan or Feb, and July or August), to buy any computer gear they needed (this included not just PCs, but also printers, accessories, etc.), exempt from all state and local sales tax. The cool part was you didn't have to be a student, to participate. Anyone buying computer gear during this time got the discount. It wasn't a rebate or a credit at tax return time, ... for the seven days retailers have their cash registers set to State Tax = 0.0%.

In massachusetts the no tax day is August 15 a Sunday. That sucks for me because my school's computer store is not open on sunday of course. Only retail stores.

Heh, you mean Spend Francisco, Taxifornia? My city! I love this city but I have to say that the local politicians here are honestly nuts with our money. I think the homeless here are about 1-2 years away from getting BMWs and Rolexes with the option to free sex change operations at the city's expense.

Hmm educational discounts eh?

This is what annoys me, you cannot order a ThinkPad directly from IBM in the UK (maybe I'll break into their offices at Portsmouth down the road should I desire) on the website, there are just links to resellers, you can kinda from the US site but I believe you have to have an AmEx card; plus pay VAT for imports and the rest of it...

...And secondly I have never heard of an educational discount programme for University students in the UK either; ie: from IBM. I'm most sure this is to do with the latter point.

Not that I have an issue about going into my final year on my undergrad' degree programme, with a T23 and not a brand new ThinkPad (Believe me you, I am more than happy with this one, let alone when I get my hands on the SXGA+ one when I arrive in the USA this week), but I'm not sure IBM is helping themselves in this country because a lot of educational discounts that are around are for other brands, some good, some not so clever. They could probably do well out of this.

That said of course; I was in Uni what must have been a month ago now (since finished my end of 2nd year exams) and some geezer was selling laptops, mostly ThinkPads second hand. *ouch* I felt the pain when I saw how much they were marked up by.

£350 for a TP 600E 366MHz, 6gb hd, 128MB, Win98SE (the most painful bit ;)) and a DVD-ROM drive?

Precisely.

Then when he said he could only offer me £400 for my T23 (512meg, 20gb, piii 1.13ghz, windows xp etc.) at the time, I tried not to laugh; because I would indeed accept £400 for it happily, but heaven knows what he would have tried to sell the T23 for if that 600E was £350, probably £700. So much so, I pointed out the price of the 600E he had; and said that something tells me your offer is not proportional... (...to the rip off prices you are charging) :)

Yes I went into comp usa and this computer guy was telling me that all retail stores will nto charge tax on August 15 thanks to our Lieutenant governor Jane swift. This came about 3-4 years ago. Compusa will be open for 24 hours on that day. I don't know if IBM will honor it. I doubt it.

no idea about online stuff. Who knows. i could call IBm but it would not really matter to me because I am buying through my college. It would make sense however since IBM is such a professional company now that I think about it they probably would.

Hmm.. My college store (U.C. Berkeley) lists 2373-3VU as $1979. Even with tax (8.5%) it is cheaper than your quote. You might wanna talk to your rep again. It would be great if he could match it without tax.

Is there anyone who could find a better deal for 2373-3VU (or any comparable variants of it)? I'm about to buy one.

cheers.

It seems like I may need to try and see if area colleges around me are cheaper than mine. I thought my school was good but the 2373-3vu is selling for $2289. Cheaper than IBM but $300 dollars more than UC berkeley. I think that is too much. Maybe my college will get an updated list soon. Maybe they have one already. The last update was a month ago. I doubt IBM puts them out that quickly thoug.

I guess I am dumb for not reading the post above mine that said the computer is $300 dollars less than June which is when my school got its last update. Maybe our colleges are the same. I would think educational discounts would be the same for all colleges. Except for maybe business schools.

Tolovan where are you getting the price quote from? Or maybe more importantly when did you get the quote from your school. For my school IBM and Toshiba gives the school a list on an Excel file. They have the T41 available too look at but I am 200 hundred miles away. And having it available does not mean necessarily the price will change cause as I said they get a list. Before June’s list the last one they had was April. So I am wondering if I should email them again for this month. I don't want to be a pest.
