T43 - wireless card and PCMCIA question?

#1 Post by magic5227 » Sat Oct 01, 2005 9:49 pm

Hello I have two questions about the T43 I just purchased.

1) What is the card slot above the PCMCIA slot? I thought it was two pcmcia slots but cards wont fit in it. What is it and what is it used for?

2) Are there wireless cards that are 108mbps compatible and will work inside the IBM T43? I see netgear routers that are 108 but i dont want to have to use a usb attatchment for that speed.

thanks.

The 108mbps speeds are done using non-standard methods, so you need a card specific for that.

The Intel and IBM cards shipped with Thinkpads only abide by standards (802.11a/b/g).... thankfully.

Since T43 got a PCI-Express Chipset, one of the card slots is an Express Card slot, i.e. a external PCI-E Interface.

Express Card is not an external PCI-E interface. Its a replacement for Cardbus designed to run at faster speeds (using serial rather than parallel connections) and take smaller cards.

i can just say what stands written on the Homepage of the ExpressCard/PCMCIA Group:
About ExpressCard, 3rd Paragraph:
"Native Bus Connections
The ExpressCard standard supports both the USB 2.0 and PCI Express interfaces. ...."
